Ao Ashi: A Celebrated Soccer Manga Reaches Its Conclusion
Renowned as a successor to the iconic sports manga Haikyu!!, Ao Ashi is poised to conclude its journey, despite being relatively new to the scene. The series has garnered critical acclaim, with its anime adaptation hailed as one of the finest in the sports genre. The manga itself has achieved impressive success, boasting over twenty million copies in circulation as of 2024. Launched in 2015 in Shogakukan’s Weekly Big Comic Spirits, Ao Ashi has captivated audiences with its exceptional blend of comedy, drama, and compelling storytelling.
As January 5, 2025, marks the tenth anniversary of this beloved soccer manga, it will also sadly signal the abrupt culmination of its narrative. While Ao Ashi has established itself among notable competitors such as Blue Lock, it is expected to conclude with 40 volumes, falling short of the 45 volumes achieved by Haikyu!!, which wrapped up in 2020. Despite often being overshadowed by other anime titles, the end of Ao Ashi presents a prime opportunity for fans and newcomers alike to delve into its rich narrative.

In a heartfelt announcement on the official Ao Ashi X account, creator Yugo Kobayashi shared the bittersweet news. Following the intense match between Tokyo City Esperion FC and Barcelona, the series will conclude with its 40th volume. This outcome was envisioned since protagonist Ashito Aoi joined the Esperion A-Team in volume 11, which set the stage for future confrontations. In his message, Kobayashi expressed gratitude towards fans:
To all supporters of AO ASHI
I am the author of AO ASHI, Yugo Kobayashi. Thank you for always supporting me. AO ASHI will reach its final episode with the conclusion of the ongoing Barcelona match.
When Ahito joined the A-Team in volume 11, the following opponents were Kashiwa, Tokyo V, Funabashi, Aomori, and Barcelona, all of which were already decided at that time (I was just wondering whether to include the Ganon-Osaka match or not), and I think I will be able to finish this story, which has progressed along with the growth of Ashito, with everything fully depicted.
The total number of volumes is 40, which is also a nice round number. I will do my best to put all my enthusiasm into the next two volumes, so please stick with me until the end. It is thanks to you, the readers, that AO ASHI has grown so much.

This intense showdown has captivated fans, who eagerly anticipate the outcome as they inch closer to the series’ climax with several chapters still pending before the final volume concludes.
Ao Ashi and Blue Lock Compete for Haikyu!!’s Throne
Ao Ashi: An Underrated Gem in Sports Anime
For those considering venturing into Ao Ashi, it’s important to recognize that the series follows a familiar trajectory typical of sports manga, where the protagonist ultimately rises to elite status. The magic lies in the journey, filled with lessons and growth along the way.
Since its debut, Haikyu!! has redefined the sports manga genre. While the landscape was not devoid of prior successes, the significant impact of Haikyu!! cannot be overstated, paving the way for newer stories. With Ao Ashi and Blue Lock leading the charge in soccer manga, a friendly rivalry has emerged between the two series as they strive to claim the legacy established by Haikyu!!.
While Blue Lock creatively subverts traditional sports anime tropes, when reigniting the spirit of Haikyu!! is concerned, Ao Ashi stands out as the top contender. Unlike the reticent Shoyo Hinata in Haikyu!!, Ashito Aoi’s bold demeanor provides a different energy, yet both characters evolve through their experiences with teamwork and personal challenges, epitomizing the timeless appeal of sports narratives.
For avid fans of Haikyu!! interested in exploring Ao Ashi, the anime version has received excellent reviews, currently holding an impressive rating of 8.17 on MyAnimeList. As those who follow Ashito’s journey brace for its spectacular finale, excitement is palpable.
