Taron Egerton is back in the spotlight as the lead actor in Carry-On. The 35-year-old Welsh talent, who gained fame in 2015 for his role in Matthew Vaughn’s Kingsman: The Secret Service, has consistently raised his profile in the film industry over the past decade. His exceptional performances in critically acclaimed works like Tetris and Black Bird, along with his impressive vocal contributions in animations such as Sing and Rocketman, have solidified his A-list status.
In Carry-On, Egerton portrays Ethan Kopek, a disillusioned TSA agent grappling with the stagnation of his career. In a desperate bid to impress his employer on Christmas Eve, Ethan’s life takes a turn when he becomes embroiled in a blackmail scenario led by Jason Bateman’s enigmatic traveler. With his job hanging in the balance, he must navigate the dangerous task of getting a perilous bag through airport security.
As Carry-On premieres for streaming on Netflix, ScreenRant caught up with Egerton to delve into the nuances of the film. The discussion highlighted his newfound TSA expertise from portraying Ethan, the challenges he faced working solely with Bateman’s voice, and his hopes regarding the future of the Kingsman franchise amidst recent comments from 20th Century Studios’ chief, Steve Asbell.
Taron Egerton Plays “Checked Bag Or Carry-On”
The Welsh Actor Retained Much TSA Knowledge
ScreenRant: I have a fun game for you called “Checked Bag or Carry-On.”I’ll provide some Christmas-themed items, and you tell me where they belong.
Taron Egerton: Let’s do it.
First item: a glass Christmas tree ornament.
Taron Egerton: That’s a tricky one! It really depends. If it’s a precious gift and you want to ensure it remains unbroken, definitely carry it on. You’d need to wrap it carefully with some cushioned clothing to protect it. But, there’s always a thrill in taking a risk. If you choose to check it, just know you might face the heartbreak of broken glass. But in most cases, if the ornament has sentimental value, I would say carry it on.
Your TSA knowledge is impressive! And what about this one: four ounces of eggnog?
Taron Egerton: I don’t think I’ve ever had eggnog! Is four ounces over the limit for liquids?
Yes, it exceeds the limit—was trying to catch you out!
Taron Egerton: Wow! So, I guess, unless you want to get into trouble, you’d better leave the eggnog behind. You could try your luck by concealing it in your luggage, but again, the trusty sweater-wrapping method would apply here too—wrap the eggnog and hope it survives!
Acting Opposite Just Jason Bateman’s Voice Was “A Real Challenge”
“He Did a Couple of Days with Me Where He Actually Provided the Voice, and He Was There Recording Live with Me…”
Let’s dive deeper into the film. The dynamic between your character and Jason Bateman’s Traveler is intriguing. As an audience member, it’s fascinating to hear Bateman’s voice but not see him onscreen. How does that influence your acting performance?
Taron Egerton: It’s definitely an interesting scenario. Jason was incredible and spent a couple of days recording live with me, which was a fantastic experience. Most of the time, I worked with a different actor off-screen. I found this challenge appealing; a lot of my scenes involved merely sitting at a monitor, interacting mainly with Bateman’s voice. The script was well-constructed, creating significant tension and intrigue, which eased my concerns about the performance.
Egerton Is Holding Out Hope For Kingsman 3
He Even Shares His Take On 20th Century Studios’ Recent Doubts
Your experience as Ethan seems to parallel your role as Eggsy in the Kingsman films. Given that you have expressed a desire to expand on Eggsy’s storyline, how do you feel about the recent statements regarding the future of the franchise?
Taron Egerton: I believe those remarks came from someone at Fox.
20th Century Studios, actually.
Taron Egerton: True. While I don’t want to overstep, I don’t think their statement means there won’t be more films. Both Matthew [Vaughn] and I are eager to create another. Although we haven’t set a filming date yet, I remain hopeful about the possibility.
