Terrifier 3 has made a significant impact at the box office, ousting Joker: Folie A Deux from its top position. Joaquin Phoenix’s portrayal of Arthur Fleck is no longer the reigning king of clowns; instead, Art the Clown has claimed the crown.
The latest installment in Damien Leone’s celebrated independent horror series is generating quite the buzz. Earlier reports indicated that some viewers at the UK premiere could not handle the film’s intensity, exiting shortly after it began. Interestingly, these accounts have only fueled interest, prompting audiences to flock to cinemas eager to witness the chilling escapades of Art the Clown in this anticipated sequel, which is rapidly becoming one of 2024’s breakout hits.
Despite initial skepticism, Terrifier 3 surpassed expectations with its box office performance. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the film debuted to an impressive $18.2 million from only 1,988 theaters in the U.S. This achievement secures its position at the top of the American box office—a forecast some industry analysts had anticipated, though many are surprised by the film’s outstanding performance.
Trailing closely behind Terrifier 3 is The Wild Robot, which earned $13.4 million in its third week across 3,854 theaters, bringing its total worldwide revenue to an impressive $148.5 million. In stark contrast, Joker: Folie A Deux is witnessing a steep decline in box office numbers.
The sequel to Joker reported disappointing earnings of just $7 million this week across 4,102 cinemas in the U.S., marking a staggering 81% drop—setting a negative record that Warner Bros. Pictures and director Todd Phillips would prefer to have avoided.
On the other hand, Terrifier 3 was produced on a modest budget of $5 million, significantly higher than its predecessors. The increase in investment can be attributed to Cineverse acquiring the film’s marketing rights for $5 million. The production cost of Terrifier 3 stood at $2 million, a notable climb from the $250,000 budget of Terrifier 2. The successful earnings of the film post-release have paved the way for discussions about Terrifier 4.
It will be intriguing to see whether international audiences embrace Art the Clown’s latest film. Initial results from France indicate success, as it opened in the top position at the French box office, attracting 45,000 viewers on its debut day, surpassing other prominent horror releases like Smile and Saw X.
Terrifier 3 is currently showing in select U.S. theaters.
