The dust has somewhat settled on Nacon’s Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown, which has resolved the connection issues that plagued its initial release. However, the ongoing discussion around its always-online requirement continues to stir controversy, especially when server outages occurred. Additionally, some players prefer a solitary experience and are unhappy with the current multiplayer focus.
In a recent launch developer diary that outlines KT Racing’s future plans, Creative Director Alain Jarniou and Game Director Guillaume Guinet addressed the potential for an offline mode and the solo gaming experience. While these features are being considered, an offline mode is not expected to arrive in the immediate future. Instead, the focus is on ensuring the game remains playable after the “end-of-life phase”of Solar Crown.
“There are really several aspects we want to maintain, as well as others we aim to evolve,” stated Guinet. “First, we are transitioning the game toward this offline dimension, which is essential for its longevity.”
“Following that, we plan to introduce a solo mode that primarily centers on racing, since the core experience of Test Drive Unlimited has always been about racing. Players often enjoy free roam, but to progress, they need to engage in races. Therefore, we want to streamline that experience as much as possible.”
While developing a solo experience is a priority for the team, they also want to retain the MMO aspect of Solar Crown. “We aim to preserve the MMO element in free roam and hubs, promoting player interactions and continuing to encourage that aspect. In races, players will still have the option to wait for others, depending on their preference.”
“Ultimately, it’s about catering to each player’s style; we need to provide flexibility in Test Drive Unlimited. If someone prefers to advance in races more solo, they should have that option, and we are working on facilitating that soon.”
Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown is available on Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC.
