Texas’ Largest Newspaper Criticizes Ted Cruz’s Divisive Politics and Endorses His Opponent

Although still uncertain, the Democrats appear to be on the verge of flipping the Texas Senate seat, particularly following the endorsement of Ted Cruz’s challenger, Colin Allred, by the state’s leading newspaper. In a blistering editorial published on the front page, the Dallas Morning News articulated a compelling case for replacing Cruz.

Since his election in 2012, Cruz has remained a controversial figure in Texas. Although he managed to secure re-election in 2018 against Beto O’Rourke, it was by a narrow margin in a state known for its conservative leanings. His upcoming race against Allred, a current congressman and former NFL athlete, may be even more competitive. During their debate on October 15, Cruz appeared agitated and discombobulated, whereas Allred maintained a composed and straightforward demeanor. The outcome of this debate was not favorable for Cruz, and the endorsement from Dallas Morning News represents another setback for his campaign.

Allred has previously garnered support from notable publications such as the Houston Chronicle, the San Antonio Express-News, and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. However, the DMN’s endorsement carries significant weight, potentially influencing more voters across Texas.

During the debate, Cruz urged audiences to weigh his accomplishments against Allred’s, a comparison that did not favor him according to the DMN. While the publication recognized some areas of disagreement with Allred (notably on border security), it highlighted Cruz’s lack of bipartisan efforts as a significant flaw.

The DMN referenced various bipartisan initiatives backed by Allred, which Cruz opposed, including a proposal that Cruz deemed a “steaming pile of crap” —despite its aim to bolster border security resources.

According to the editorial, “Cruz has long championed a divisive form of politics.” His divisive approach has characterized his political journey since at least 2012. Even fellow conservatives have criticized Cruz’s extreme partisanship, with the DMN noting instances of bipartisan efforts from Republicans that Cruz declined to support.

Conversely, Allred was commended for his readiness to engage in bipartisan dialogue when required. The editorial emphasized that strict partisanship hinders progress, a challenge that transcends party lines, something DMN considers a critical issue this election cycle. Allred has been recognized as the “most bipartisan member of Congress” on two occasions by the Common Ground Committee. The endorsement concludes, asserting that “[Allred] strives for solutions through compromise on vital matters.”

Historically, Texas is viewed as a reliable Republican stronghold, making the closeness of this Senate race somewhat remarkable. It should be noted that Cruz still leads Allred in most polls by several points. Nevertheless, the margin has been decreasing progressively over the months. In July, Cruz had a 9-point advantage, which dwindled to 5 points in August, 3.6 points in September, and now stands at 3.5 points in October.

It’s essential to consider that the polling data reflects sentiments only up to October 16. The results from the debate on the 15th and the fresh endorsement from the DMN have yet to be included, potentially affecting voter decisions significantly. With only a few weeks remaining before the election, it’s plausible—though perhaps unlikely—that Allred could shift ahead. Every help counts, so it is hoped that the DMN editorial will provide Allred’s campaign with much-needed momentum.
