Announcing its next adventure, Hazelight Studios—celebrated for critically acclaimed titles like A Way Out and It Takes Two—has unveiled Split Fiction. This game, also under the publication wing of Electronic Arts, promises to build on the studio’s legacy of cooperative gameplay.
Founded in 2014, this Swedish developer has excelled in creating inclusive multiplayer experiences suitable for both seasoned gamers and newcomers. Their last title, It Takes Two, not only clinched multiple awards but notably won Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2021, alongside accolades for Best Family Game and Best Multiplayer Game.
Split Fiction: A Groundbreaking Multiplayer Experience
In the latest reveal, Hazelight showcased Split Fiction at the 2024 Game Awards. This game continues the studio’s tradition of emphasizing teamwork and collaboration. However, what sets this title apart is its diverse array of environments, transitioning seamlessly between fantastical realms and science fiction scenery. Players can expect an eclectic mix of missions, including breathtaking escapes from supernovae and whimsical dance-offs against monkeys. Additional highlights feature gravity bikes, hoverboard chases, epic battles with evil cats, and thrilling rides on sandsharks.
Significantly, Split Fiction will be Hazelight’s inaugural title to incorporate a cross-platform multiplayer feature. The studio’s acclaimed Friend’s Pass system will return, allowing two players to experience the game together with just one purchase. This feature has been enhanced with the ability for players on different platforms to connect, while traditional local split-screen options will also be available.
The Writers Behind the Worlds
The narrative of Split Fiction centers around its protagonists, Mio and Zoe, who are imaginative writers of science fiction and fantasy stories, respectively. As they find themselves ensnared within the vivid realms they have penned, the duo embarks on a quest to reclaim their creative destinies while strengthening their bond. This storyline could very well echo the emotional depth and narrative craftsmanship that made A Way Out and It Takes Two so impactful.
Set for release on March 6, 2025, Split Fiction will be accessible on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, with availability through Steam, the EA app, and the Epic Games Store. All platform versions are slated to retail at $49.99.
