Warning: The following article contains spoilers for season 1, episode 9 of The Day of the Jackal.
In the thrilling penultimate episode of The Day of the Jackal (2024), the protagonist, Jackal (portrayed by Eddie Redmayne), finds himself in the most dangerous predicament of his career as he finally confronts Ulle Dag Charles (UDC). Despite Jackal’s careful planning and strategic approach throughout the series, past failures loom large, and with law enforcement hot on his trail, his survival increasingly hangs by a thread.
After an unsuccessful mission in Tallinn, Estonia, Jackal retreated home to regroup and devise a new strategy. This marks a significant moment, as it’s the first time he has met with Nuria since the escalating chaos began. While Jackal tries to reassure Nuria about the impending completion of his task, she expresses concern over her brother’s risky alliance with a local crime figure. In a parallel subplot, MI6 has unexpectedly ordered Bianca (Lashana Lynch) to curtail her investigation into Jackal, raising eyebrows about the agency’s decision-making processes.
Successful Execution of UDC
Jackal’s Major Career Milestone
In a pivotal moment, Jackal successfully completes his high-stakes assignment to eliminate UDC. The mounting pressure from both his volatile domestic situation and the complexity of the mission itself has driven him into a corner. Yet, the lure of the $100 million bounty is a motivating factor he cannot overlook, compelling him to envision a fresh start with Nuria post-mission.
Desperate and reckless, he commandeers a boat, eliminates its owner, neutralizes a threat to his brother-in-law, and makes a final dash towards UDC. As he executes the assassination, the stakes only rise; he faces the dual threats of local law enforcement and drones surveilling his escape. Although he momentarily evades capture, the odds of him successfully fleeing the scene are rapidly diminishing.
Can Jackal Evade Capture?
Narrowing Escape Routes
Currently, Jackal finds himself hunted by private security forces employed by UDC, in addition to local authorities who may also have him in their sights. Complicating matters, MI6 has seemingly abandoned their pursuit of Jackal due to bureaucratic pressures, notably sidelining Bianca, who has been a crucial figure throughout the series. Yet, her strong character suggests that her story will resume in the concluding episode.
The orchestration of events seems to hint at a deeper manipulation within MI6, orchestrated by the very elites who contracted Jackal for the hit. Following this bloody trail, it seems inevitable that law enforcement will ultimately close in on him, perhaps leading straight to his family and home. If he hopes to safeguard his loved ones and escape the impending chaos, he must act swiftly.
Is Jackal True to His Promises to Nuria?
Turmoil in Jackal’s Domestic Life
Jackal’s commitment to Nuria is increasingly tested as his circumstances spiral out of control. Though he assured her that his mission in Tallinn would be his final job, his failure has forced him to break that promise under dire situations. The hope for a $100 million payout looms large, but the risks associated with it may overshadow any dreams of a peaceful future.
With his assassination mission now complete, Jackal faces uncertainty regarding the payment from his benefactors. Given his violent history and prior dealings, the question arises: will he be compensated for his services, or will his clients refuse payment? This dilemma, intertwined with the complexities of his relationships and morality, sets the stage for an explosive conclusion in the series finale of The Day of the Jackal.
