In recent discussions regarding the future of AAA game studios, both Sony and Insomniac Games have emphasized 2024 as a slow year. Nevertheless, these companies are actively gearing up for future releases that have generated significant anticipation among fans, particularly with titles such as Ghost of Yotei and Marvel’s Wolverine on the horizon for the PlayStation 5. Insomniac has played a crucial role in solidifying the PS5’s presence through successful titles like Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. As excitement builds for the next installment of Spider-Man, conversations are shifting around the studio’s growing focus on Marvel properties.
While it’s understandable that Insomniac has emerged as Sony’s principal developer for licensed Marvel games, this focus raises concerns. Although the studio has excelled in these high-profile projects, the lack of diversification might overshadow its earlier successes with original franchises. Ratchet & Clank, once the hallmark of Insomniac’s identity, deserves recognition beyond just being a nostalgic name. The risk of Marvel titles completely eclipsing its legacy is a pressing concern among fans and industry observers alike.
The Evolution of Insomniac’s Franchise Priorities
Although Insomniac Games officially became a part of Sony Interactive Entertainment in 2019, their collaboration spans decades, beginning with the iconic Spyro the Dragon trilogy, which contributed to the PlayStation 1’s branding in the late 90s, followed by 2002’s successful Ratchet & Clank for the PlayStation 2. Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, Insomniac consistently released entries in the Ratchet & Clank series alongside the Resistance trilogy. This output firmly established their reputation as a valued developer on the Sony platform.
The Shift in Insomniac’s Focus Post Marvel’s Spider-Man
The dynamics of Insomniac’s output began to shift dramatically following the launch of Marvel’s Spider-Man in 2018. The game’s exceptional reception both critically and commercially likely accelerated Sony’s acquisition of the studio the following year. Since then, Insomniac has been focused more intensely on fewer game releases.
As the 2020s progress, Insomniac has shown a marked reduction in titles produced, with Ratchet & Clank currently taking a backseat to new Marvel projects. The studio continues to uphold a high quality standard, but a disparity is evident between the franchises, threatening the balance that has served them well.
The Potential Overshadowing of Ratchet & Clank by Marvel Titles
Recent leaks suggest a robust slate of future Marvel projects from Insomniac, including Marvel’s Wolverine. Out of the six known or rumored upcoming titles, only a single project is related to Ratchet & Clank, projected to launch no earlier than the fiscal year 2029. This delay, coupled with the volatile financial landscape for AAA games and project cancellations within the studio, creates uncertainty around the future direction of the franchise.
If this trend persists and the industry-wide layoffs continue, the iconic Ratchet & Clank series may face neglect. Given its storied place within PlayStation’s history, depriving it of new stories and characters, especially with current favorites like Rivet and Kit, would be a significant loss. Both Sony and Insomniac must ensure that while Marvel projects thrive, Ratchet & Clank receives the attention and development necessary to shine once again.
