Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for episode 6 of Landman.
In the captivating world of Landman, the tension between siblings Cooper (played by Jacob Lofland) and Ainsley Norris (portrayed by Michelle Randolph) has left viewers perplexed. While the series keenly illustrates conflicts among various characters, it has not adequately explored the root of this animosity. As the story unfolds, we witness constant struggles faced by characters like Tommy (Billy Bob Thornton) and Monty (Jon Hamm), particularly with the challenges of navigating the oil industry. Episode 6 culminates in a new confrontation for Tommy, involving Manuel (J.R. Villareal). However, the feud between Ainsley and Cooper remains particularly baffling.
Hints About Cooper & Ainsley’s Relationship
Personality Clashes and Aftermath of Divorce
While Landman has yet to provide a clear explanation for the hostility between Cooper and Ainsley, it has dropped some hints. One significant factor could be their vastly different personalities. Ainsley embodies the carefree spirit of her mother Angela, enjoying social events, while Cooper mirrors their father Tommy’s hardworking nature. This divergence in their characteristics lends itself to heated interactions between them.
Furthermore, their views on their parents’ relationship highlight their contrasting priorities; Ainsley yearns for a reconciliation between Tommy and Angela, while Cooper dismisses this notion outright. This disagreement perhaps fuels their mutual disdain.
Age may also play a role in their contentious dynamic. Ainsley, at just 17, may exhibit more self-absorbed tendencies that alienate her brother, as evidenced in scenes like their hospital confrontation. Cooper’s sharp remarks reflect a deep-seated frustration as well.
Despite these insights, the exact nature of their conflict remains obscured. It is plausible that events transpired prior to the series’ timeline, creating an unhealed rift between them. Additionally, the fallout from Tommy and Angela’s divorce may have played a substantial part in their estrangement, especially with Cooper attending college while Ainsley remained in high school. Yet, until the show chooses to divulge more, the mystery surrounding their relationship endures.
Cast Doesn’t Have the Answers Either
Actors Uncertain About Character Conflict
The enigma of Cooper and Ainsley’s animosity extends beyond the audience, as even the cast remains in the dark regarding its origins. In an interview with Screen Rant, Jacob Lofland shared that this tense rivalry has become a playful topic between him and Michelle Randolph, noting that neither actor has received a script detailing the backstory for their characters’ disdain.
“That’s kind of a running joke that Michelle and I have is we don’t know why we dislike each other, and that has not been written. We never got that backstory, so what we’re expecting is that’s going to come out as we go, and we’ll find out what actually went on with this family, to put us in the position where we started, and that’s got to be why they don’t like each other. So, we’re not sure; we’re still going to have to live that and figure it out, and the audience will learn with us, just like we are.”
According to Lofland, any revelations about the root of Cooper and Ainsley’s conflict are likely to be explored in subsequent seasons, possibly season 2. In the meantime, other narrative arcs, particularly Tommy’s evolving relationship with Angela and challenges posed by cartel activities in the oil fields, will likely commandeer more immediate attention. Thus, viewers may need to exercise patience before gaining insights into the complicated sibling rivalry in Landman.
