The sixth episode of The Penguin, titled “Gold Sumit,” reflects a significant shift in control within Gotham’s crime scene. After successfully distributing stolen goods belonging to Sofia, Oz begins to garner recognition, organizing a crucial meeting with major crime groups, including the Triads, the Sullivans, and the Odessa mob. Oz assures them that through uniting the smaller gangs against the Maronis and Gigantes, they can gain control over Gotham. He ultimately secures their loyalty, as each mob boss signals their support by accepting the drinks he presents.
Unveiling Sofia’s Strategy to Dismantle Oz
Meanwhile, Sofia has been strategizing her own moves to gain an upper hand over Oz. During a raid on his residence, she discovers a photograph of Oz’s lover, Eve, hidden away. Tracking Eve to her apartment, Sofia confronts her, demanding Oz’s whereabouts. Despite her desire for vengeance, Sofia opts not to execute Eve, as she was Oz’s alibi the night her brother Alberto was murdered. Instead, Eve divulges Oz’s location at Crown Point.
Since launching their operation, Oz, Victor, and Francis have been residing at Crown Point, an area neglected by the council and plagued by power cuts due to energy diversion to affluent neighborhoods. After witnessing his mother endure the biting cold, Oz captures Hady, a member of the Gotham council, threatening to inflict harm unless power is restored to Crown Point. This ultimately leads to a tender moment in the episode’s finale, showing Victor and Francis joyfully dancing to music from their revived record player. The warmth of the scene is abruptly disrupted when Sofia is revealed lurking in the shadows, weapon in hand.
Sofia previously informed Sal Maroni that the Penguin’s greatest vulnerability was his lack of personal connections to exploit. However, that has altered with Sofia’s realization that Francis is alive and that Oz has developed a relationship with Victor.
Are Two Main Characters at Risk in Episode 7 of The Penguin?
Sofia’s arrival in Oz’s apartment at the end of Episode 6 clearly conveys her intent. She likely anticipated encountering Oz but found much more than she bargained for, as the knowledge of his loved ones may be a crucial asset to her plans. While the fates of Victor and Francis remain uncertain, it is plausible Sofia will initially keep them alive to leverage against Oz. It’s also suggested she might resort to torturing them to inflict emotional suffering on Oz as part of her vendetta for his betrayal.
Max has released a teaser for Episode 7 of The Penguin, deliberately refraining from showcasing Francis or Victor to maintain suspense regarding their outcomes. The preview hints at Oz’s return to his apartment, where he is captured by Sal Maroni. Additionally, Sofia seems poised to enlist her former doctor and current lover, Julian Rush, to ensure Oz experiences profound suffering, likely hinting at the potential revival of her own traumatic experiences with electroconvulsive therapy during her time at Arkham. The pressing question remains whether she will use this method on Oz or instead target Francis or Victor as the next victims in her quest.
The Penguin Episodes 1-6 are currently available for streaming on Max.
