The Rookie Showrunner Explains Tim’s Feelings Post-Breakup with Lucy & Tackles Major Questions for Season 7

After a prolonged hiatus, the hit series The Rookie is set to make its much-anticipated comeback on ABC on Tuesday, January 7, at 10 p.m. ET. The premiere episode of season 7, titled “The Shot,”delves into the aftermath of Oscar and Jason’s daring prison escape. This season heralds significant changes, particularly with the departure of series regular Tru Valentino, who announced his exit in August 2024. The narrative will shift its focus to introduce two new trainees, with Patrick Keleher and Deric Augustine joining as recurring guest stars.

In a fresh turn of events, season 7 will explore Tim and Lucy’s evolving relationship, which may echo their initial dynamics. Their slow-burn romance has been a cornerstone of the show, often leading to comical situations due to their contrasting personalities. Following Tim’s breakup with his former partner in the episode “Secrets and Lies,”the once playful exchanges between Tim and Lucy have been charged with unresolved feelings and tension. Showrunner Alexi Hawley teases that the season opener will take them into lighter territory, where Tim seeks to make amends for his past mistakes.

In an interview with ScreenRant, Hawley provides insights into season 6’s cliffhanger, Tim’s mindset post-breakup, and what viewers can expect with the debut of season 7 of The Rookie.

Nolan and Bailey’s Adoption Plans Complicated by Oscar and Jason’s Escape

“We really lean into the paranoia and the fear of what it’s like to have somebody out there who is targeting you, but when and where is in question.”

Nolan and Bailey’s aspiration to adopt a child faces challenges due to Oscar and Jason’s escape. How will this situation impact their plans?

Alexi Hawley: It will definitely affect those plans. Jason, especially, being at large, poses an existential threat since Bailey is his primary target. Thus, discussing the introduction of a child into such a precarious environment is far from a current priority.

We really lean into the paranoia and the fear of what it’s like to have somebody out there who is targeting you, but when and where that threat materializes is uncertain. Nonetheless, we may revisit the adoption storyline in the future, though for now, it will take a back seat.

With Aaron absent from forthcoming episodes, could there be a possibility of his return in the future?

Alexi Hawley: Absolutely. Tru [Valentino] is an exceptional actor and has contributed significantly to our show over several seasons, and we would love to have him return in some capacity. However, it felt necessary from a creative standpoint to adjust the story’s direction, although he remains very much alive in our universe.

Lucy Holds the Key to Chenford’s Relationship Status in Season 7

“Tim is the one in the wrong, and therefore he doesn’t get to just come in and say, ‘Hey, can we get back together?’”

What can audiences expect from the new rookie characters this season?

Alexi Hawley: Crafting rookie characters is always an enjoyable challenge since they must perform on two levels. They need to be compelling individuals while also enhancing the narrative for their training officers. For example, last season saw the introduction of Celina, who was Nolan’s first rookie. This dynamic is crucial as we introduce new characters this season.

This season features a Texas transplant—new to the LAPD yet experienced, having served as a police officer in Sugar Land, Texas for two years. We’ve never explored this kind of character before. It was fun to create a confident cowboy who is not easily intimidated by Tim, especially as they navigate their unique interactions. We also have a younger rookie that adds another layer to Lucy’s character arc, as she grapples with her biggest fear of potentially becoming like Tim.

Tim’s decision to end his relationship with Lucy last season left a significant mark. How does he enter season 7 regarding their relationship?

Alexi Hawley: Tim is acutely aware that he has made a significant mistake and wants to rectify it, both romantically and personally. He genuinely cares for Lucy, but he knows he must respect her decision-making process. While he has much to address personally and the romantic implications remain complex, we aim to embrace positivity this season. They’ve encountered much of the fallout from their breakup, so we’re exploring how to rebuild their relationship. The bet they make will serve as a playful vehicle to re-enter the fun dynamic of Chenford.
