CD Projekt RED has recently unveiled plans for The Witcher 4, marking a new chapter in the acclaimed RPG franchise. In this upcoming installment, the beloved witcher Geralt of Rivia steps back as a protagonist, allowing his adopted daughter, Ciri, to embark on her own journey. While The Witcher 4 promises fresh narratives and original characters, it also presents an exciting opportunity to introduce Francesca Findabair, a formidable sorceress and elf leader from Andrzej Sapkowski’s legendary novels.
Understanding Francesca Findabair
Francesca Findabair, also known as Enid an Gleanna (Daisy of the Valleys), holds a significant role as a leader of Dol Blathanna, one of the last elven strongholds. As a potent sorceress and a member of the Brotherhood of Sorcerers, she navigated the treacherous waters of political intrigue. Francesca and her Scoia’tel forces ultimately conspired with Nilfgaardian Emperor Emhyr var Emreis, betraying the Brotherhood to secure the independence of her realm.
Experiencing remorse for her actions, Francesca aided Yennefer of Vengerberg during the chaos and later aligned herself with Yennefer, Triss Merigold, and other sorceresses to form the Lodge of Sorceresses. Despite their attempts to recruit Ciri, the group eventually disbanded. While Francesca does not make a direct appearance in the video games, she is mentioned in The Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings and commands the Scoia’tel faction in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
Francesca’s Interest in Ciri and Her Elder Blood
In the context of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Francesca remains the only member of the Lodge of Sorceresses who does not physically appear in the games, though her character has been explored in the Netflix adaptation’s later seasons. As a high-ranking elven leader with potent magical abilities, her character would seamlessly integrate into Ciri’s narrative arc.
Role as an Elder Blood Expert: Ally or Adversary?
Francesca’s interest in Ciri is rooted in the latter’s lineage, which traces back to the legendary Lara Dorren and the elusive Elder Blood. This heritage bestows Ciri with extraordinary abilities, which exhibit during various encounters in the game series. Although the plotlines of the novels and games prominently feature the Aen Elle—an alternate realm of hostile elves led by Eredin—Francesca and her compatriots from Dol Blathanna may also seek to connect with Ciri.
While less versed in Elder Blood intricacies than her elven counterpart Ida Emean aep Siveny, Francesca possesses the capability to recognize its qualities. Her Gwent card references her past ability to determine the nature of Elder Blood in newborns, suggesting she could act as a mentor or guiding figure to Ciri.
Conversely, Francesca could emerge as an antagonist—echoing Eredin’s earlier villainy. Her commitment to her people and Dol Blathanna may compel her to pursue any means necessary to protect their future by accessing Ciri’s unique powers. Whether as a friend or foe, incorporating Francesca into The Witcher 4 represents a thrilling opportunity to deepen the game’s narrative and expand character relationships.
