In a bittersweet turn for fans of Netflix’s The Witcher, season four marks the departure of the beloved Henry Cavill, who will be succeeded by Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia. Compounding this disappointment, Kim Bodnia also exits the series, stepping away from his part as Vesemir, but for understandable reasons. Adapting beloved narratives from books and video games poses significant challenges, yet The Witcher has generally navigated this journey commendably, particularly in casting choices.
Despite the significant alterations made from the books during the adaptation of The Witcher 3 video game, Cavill’s performance as Geralt has received enthusiastic acclaim from the die-hard fantasy fanbase, alongside Anya Chalotra’s striking portrayal of Yennefer. Throughout three seasons, Cavill has added new dimensions to Geralt’s character, demonstrating a vulnerability rarely seen in the typically stoic figure. As fans brace for a fourth season that brings fresh faces in place of Cavill and Bodnia, an official statement sheds light on the reasons behind Vesemir’s recasting.
A representative for Kim Bodnia disclosed to RadioTimes that the reason behind Bodnia’s exit was a scheduling conflict, making it impossible for him to participate in the upcoming season. This news is undoubtedly disheartening for fans eager to see Bodnia reprise his role as Vesemir; however, those interested in his next ventures can catch him in the Apple TV+ original film F1, where he portrays Kaspar, sharing the screen with notable actors like Brad Pitt, Kerry Condon, and Javier Bardem. Previously, Bodnia achieved acclaim for his role as Konstantin Vasiliev in the award-winning BBC series Killing Eve, and as Rasmus Holm Jensen in the 2013 Danish crime film, The Shooter.
Kim Bodnia was introduced in season two of The Witcher as Vesemir, a pivotal mentor and father figure to Geralt. Yet, the audience only began to see the depth of Vesemir’s character later in season three, as the storyline expanded beyond the confines of Kaer Morhen. Much like Ciri’s adoption by Geralt, Vesemir’s journey into witchery began when he came under the Law of Surprise and entered the School of the Wolf.
In a recent conversation, Liam Hemsworth shared insights about stepping in for Cavill, admitting that he had not previously watched The Witcher series but regarded the games as some of his favorites. Fortunately, many familiar faces will return for season four, including Anya Chalotra as Yennefer, Freya Allan as Ciri, and Joey Batey as Jaskier. With season five already scripted, it will be intriguing to see how cast additions like Laurence Fishburne as Regis and James Purefoy as Stefan Skellen will influence the forthcoming narrative arcs.
