Exploring Kamome Academy and Its Legends
Set in the fictional Kamome Academy, Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun thrives on rumors of supernatural events, particularly the Seven Wonders that define the institution’s eerie reputation. An essential part of these legends is the tale of Hanako-san of the Toilet, a spirit believed to fulfill wishes at a price, mirroring a popular Japanese urban legend.
Central character Nene Yashiro, struggling in her love life, seeks to summon Hanako-san for a romantic wish, only to discover the reality is far from her expectations—Hanako is male! Despite her hopes, Hanako refuses to grant her desires, resulting in Nene becoming spiritually linked to him, initiating her role as his assistant through various supernatural escapades. Alongside them, Kou Minamoto enters the scene, determined to purge the Seven Wonders from existence.
Originally created by the duo AidaIro, the “Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun” manga has been serialized in Square Enix’s Monthly GFantasy since 2015 and has produced 22 volumes to date. For English-speaking audiences, Yen Press holds the licensing rights. The creators also offer the After-School Hanako-kun spin-off, which has been running in Pixiv Comic since 2018 and has two published volumes in the US.
Both the main series and its spin-off are now accessible on Crunchyroll, available in both subbed and dubbed formats, catering to a wide array of viewers looking to dive into this enchanting yet spooky universe.
