Tom Holland’s $407M Video Game Adaptation Shifting Streaming Platforms While Fans Await Sequel

Tom Holland has established himself as one of the most recognized figures in contemporary cinema. While his acting career began in childhood, it was his portrayal of the beloved superhero Spider-Man in Spider-Man: Homecoming in 2017 that propelled him into superstardom. Since joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Holland has been part of several blockbuster hits, including three films that rank among the top 10 highest-grossing movies globally: Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Infinity War, and Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Despite his remarkable success within the MCU, Holland’s ventures outside of it have seen mixed results. His foray into young adult adaptations with Chaos Walking failed to resonate with audiences, ultimately resulting in no sequel. Similarly, his collaboration with Robert Downey Jr. in the 2020 release Doolittle didn’t perform well, grossing $251.4 million against an estimated budget of $175 million. Now, yet another of Holland’s films is making a transition to a new streaming platform.

Uncharted Is Getting A New Streaming Home

Uncharted Is Coming To Max

The film adaptation of the popular video game franchise, Uncharted, is soon to find a new home on streaming. Directed by Ruben Fleischer, the film features Holland alongside stars like Mark Wahlberg, Antonio Banderas, Tati Gabrielle, and Sofia Ali. Although it received lukewarm reviews and had a modest box office performance, earning $407.1 million on a $120 million budget, a sequel, Uncharted 2, is currently in the works.

On January 15, Uncharted will make its debut on Max, transitioning from its current availability on Hulu. Viewers have just under three weeks to watch it on Hulu before the film migrates to Max.

Why You Should Watch Uncharted On Max

Mark Wahlberg as Sully aiming a gun in Uncharted

While Uncharted may not be a flawless film, it aligns perfectly with the growing trend of video game adaptations gaining traction in both film and television. With the success of series such as Fallout and acclaimed adaptations like The Last Of Us, the genre is set for continued growth. Audiences can benefit from exploring both successful and less successful adaptations to better understand how this medium is evolving, making now an excellent time to watch Uncharted, especially with its sequel on the horizon.

According to a review from ScreenRant:

Uncharted isn’t without its merits. There are thrilling scenes and engaging tensions among the characters—who are rife with trust issues—that make their interactions dynamic. However, the film’s constant struggle with trust leads to a somewhat tedious experience. Furthermore, the film lacks charm, and attempts at lightheartedness often fall flat, with only Wahlberg providing a few well-timed comedic moments. The film also frustratingly brushes over serious topics, such as the looting of Baghdad’s museum, which deserves more attention.
