Emotional Depth in Landman
In episode 6 of Landman, Paulina Chávez, who portrays Ariana, shares insights into a poignant scene between her character and Tommy Norris, played by Billy Bob Thornton. The moment occurs at Cooper’s bedside, where Tommy engages Ariana in a brief yet significant conversation while Cooper remains unconscious. Their dialogue centers around Ariana’s son and her emotional state following a traumatic event that claimed the life of her husband and many others.
Understanding the Characters’ Connection
During an interview with ScreenRant, Chávez elaborated on the depth of emotions displayed in the hospital scene, emphasizing Ariana’s dual role as both a grieving widow and a concerned mother. This duality allows her to resonate with Tommy’s fears for his own children, reflecting the harsh realities of life in the oil industry. Despite the brevity of their exchange, it powerfully encapsulates the weight of their shared experiences and the understanding that forms between them.
My goodness, I think I obviously know what I know as an actor, that Ariana is a widow, has a baby, and all the emotions that come with it, and just kind of throwing it all away and just being in the moment. I also think because she is a mother, and she has a baby boy, imagine a mother’s fear of, “Oh my gosh, my kid’s gonna grow up, and what if this happens to him?”I would be terrified.
So, I think there is that bond that Tommy and Ariana have. That understanding, as a new parent and now widow, that, yeah, life is very short, and you never know what’s going to happen. I think that scene, though very brief, shows you all the emotions that are are needed to see what Ariana is going through, and how Tommy sympathizes with her.

Our Analysis of Ariana & Cooper’s Relationship
Complex Dynamics at Play
In the seventh episode of Landman, a noteworthy development occurs when Cooper returns home with Ariana instead of accompanying Tommy. Chávez offers insight into this choice, suggesting that Tommy’s recognition of their bond influences his reluctance to insist Cooper return with him. As a mother grappling with immense guilt, Ariana’s motivations for caring for Cooper become clearer, indicating her deep complexities.
Although Cooper and Ariana share an intimate moment with their second kiss, the presence of her deceased husband’s photograph on her nightstand amplifies the notion that she is not yet ready to embrace a new relationship. This tension hints at Ariana’s unresolved grief, suggesting that her urge to form a romantic connection with Cooper may stem more from her feelings of guilt than genuine readiness. The episode concludes on an uncertain note, as Rebecca confronts Cooper, complicating the dynamics further as he assists Ariana with settlement matters.
