Honkai: Star Rail Update 3.0 – A Look at the Best DPS Units
The highly anticipated 3.0 update for Honkai: Star Rail is on the horizon, promising to deliver extensive mechanics and quality-of-life improvements. Notably, this update will introduce the game’s first new Path, titled the Remembrance Path, which centers around summoning allies to enhance damage output. While this Path appears to be purely focused on DPS, it may include hybrid characters that will broaden its utility.
Since the game’s launch, the meta has experienced multiple shifts; however, the fundamental team composition has remained relatively stable. Typically, it includes one DPS character, two support units, and one sustain character to ensure longevity in battles. Notable exceptions to this structure are the D.O.T. teams, which have been overshadowed since the introduction of Black Swan, and Pure Fiction teams, which often rely on two DPS units for swift enemy wave clearing.
10. Jade & Kafka – Potential for Future Builds
5-Star Quantum Erudition / 5-Star Lightning Nihility
Both Jade and Kafka find themselves in a unique position; while they occupy niche roles, they also possess significant potential for the future. Jade’s kit may thrive in upcoming Pure Fiction teams, especially with characters like Herta leading the charge. As new units from the Remembrance or Erudition arenas are introduced, there is a possibility for her to unlock her full capabilities. However, her specialization likely restricts her to being a niche Pure Fiction specialist.
Conversely, Kafka excels as a key enabler for D.O.T. teams, yet currently struggles due to a lack of synergistic teammates. Should the meta shift back to favor this type of gameplay, Kafka stands to regain prominence. Nonetheless, concerns exist regarding the arrival of newer characters who may fulfill her role more efficiently.
9. Imbibitor Lunae – Clunky But Effective
5-Star Imaginary Destruction
Upon his release, Imbibitor Lunae made a strong impact, though he’s become less favored as the meta evolved. His kit demands significant skill point management due to his most powerful skill requiring three skill points to execute. Consequently, partners need to generate abundant skill points, or he must rely on executing his ultimate to gain free skills.
The most effective allies for Lunae include high-end options like Sparkle, one of the best Harmony units, to help generate skill points. Without her, team management becomes more challenging, but he remains usable, albeit less versatile compared to premier DPS characters.
8. Rappa – The Weakest Break DPS Option
5-Star Imaginary Erudition
Despite the strength of Break teams, Rappa has not made a significant impact. Although her flashy kit is engaging, it does not measure up to her rivals in the Break category. While she has possibilities within Pure Fiction teams, that alone is insufficient for a higher ranking.
Rappa’s unique challenge lies in being the only Break DPS without a weakness implant, constraining her use to battles against enemies vulnerable to Imaginary. This may transform slightly with the introduction of Tingyun Fugue, who can potentially increase her effectiveness, though she still lags behind Boothill and Firefly in the hierarchy.
7. Dr. Ratio – An Impressive Free Unit
5-Star Imaginary Hunt
As a free distribution character accessible to many, Dr. Ratio stands out as a near-top-tier DPS option. If not for Feixiao, he would claim the top spot as the best follow-up attack DPS. He is straightforward to build and can deal sufficient damage to tackle most game content effectively.
6. Boothill – Effective When Strategically Played
5-Star Physical Hunt
Boothill, the inaugural Break DPS in the game, continues to be a top contender. His damage potential scales well, yet he similarly requires physical weakness to maximize his effectiveness. His ultimate is beneficial as it generates Physical weakness, allowing for expansion beyond just Physical weak enemies. However, he may be outpaced by Firefly when it comes to efficiency.
5. Jing Yuan – Continuously Benefiting from Buffs
5-Star Lightning Erudition
Initially released as a visually captivating character, Jing Yuan struggled with lackluster damage. However, as additional characters like Sparkle, Robin, and Sunday emerged offering influential builds, he has benefitted from indirect buffs that elevate his status within the game.
Future reiterations of support characters intended for the Remembrance Path may continue to bolster his effectiveness. His Lightning Lord functions as a summon, and consequently, any support that enhances summon damage or abilities would inherently elevate Jing Yuan as well. Although it remains marginal whether this will place him in a top-tier category, he retains a dignified presence within the roster.
4. Yunli – A Hidden Gem in Strength
5-Star Physical Destruction
Often overlooked due to the proximity of Feixiao’s release, Yunli offers considerable power there is no need to underestimate. This counterattack maestro is straightforward to build and demonstrates exceptional damage potential with well-scaled attributes. Furthermore, her team compositions tend to be more budget-friendly compared to many top-tier units, making her an advantageous pick against physical weaknesses.
Nonetheless, Yunli’s effectiveness hinges on consistency, as a significant portion of her damage is derived from counterattacks. For optimal performance, her signature Light Cone is essential to ensure she is struck by enemies. While alternate options like Lynx can substitute, they lack long-term sustainability. Despite these limitations, Yunli remains formidable when she has access to her ideal setup.
3. Acheron – An Enduring Powerhouse
5-Star Lightning Nihility
Though her position has slipped from the pinnacle, Acheron remains a prominent DPS choice. When paired with the right team and properly constructed, her damage potential is exceptional, and her ultimate can be accessed rapidly. While utilizing her Light Cone boosts her effectiveness, several alternative options can provide support as well.
However, Acheron’s limitations can hinder her team’s potential. Without her second Eidolon, the need for two other Nihility characters maximizes her ultimate damage, potentially sacrificing space for a Harmony support. Sparkle is typically her best partner, but the niche character Jiaoqiu, despite his limited popularity, remains a viable option. This leaves Pela as a solid, albeit less-than-optimal substitute.
2. Feixiao – A Well-Deserved Top Tier Character
5-Star Wind Hunt
Feixiao emerged as one of the most awaited characters of the 2.0 updates, and she unequivocally delivered. This Follow-Up Attack (FUA) specialist exhibits remarkable damage output alongside a versatile ultimate ability. Her kit is designed to navigate various game mechanics and enemy vulnerabilities effortlessly.
Feixiao presents minimal downsides in her military capability. She is simple to build, boasts adaptable Light Cone selections, and integrates well into budget-friendly teams. The premier configuration includes characters like Topaz, Robin, and Aventurine, although her flexibility in team composition allows for diverse strategies. For anyone fortunate enough to have Feixiao, she is poised to conquer the majority of challenging content in HSR for the foreseeable future.
1. Firefly – The Unrivaled Queen of Honkai: Star Rail
5-Star Fire Destruction
While the other top contenders showcase their unique talents, none can rival Firefly’s versatility and strength. Initially a fan-favorite, her kit further solidified her position as a premier character. This Break DPS excels in applying Fire Weakness to adversaries and delivers remarkable Super Break damage, standing above her peers.
Her success is amplified by synergistic Break support characters. Lingsha’s Fire attributes align flawlessly with Firefly’s playstyle, while Gallagher previously provided increased utility. Though Tingyun Fugue may not enhance Firefly’s damage output to the same degree as others, she complements her as a secondary DPS, enabling quick enemy breaks. Overall, Firefly maximizes her opportunity for Super Break damage, maintaining her status amidst the new Path’s introduction. Despite potential competition, she is unlikely to wane in effectiveness within HSR’s evolving landscape.
In conclusion, the diverse gameplay of HSR showcases that while metas may shift, the majority of DPS units remain viable and respected. Rarely does a character fall out of playability entirely; however, Blade and Seele face challenges due to their narrowly focused niches. Most units still possess situational relevance and may gain from the introduction of new characters. As we approach the pivotal 3.0 update, these ten characters represent the pinnacle of DPS in Honkai: Star Rail.
