Third-generation K-pop idols are those artists who made their debut between 2012 and early 2018. In an increasingly competitive music industry, the rise of fourth and fifth-generation groups has led to many beloved third-generation idols either becoming inactive or disbanding altogether.
However, a handful of third-generation girl groups continue to thrive, with some even releasing new music in 2024.
Red Velvet: A Decade of Excellence
Debuting in 2014 under SM Entertainment, the quintet Red Velvet — composed of Irene, Seulgi, Wendy, Joy, and Yeri — recently celebrated their tenth anniversary.
In August, they marked this milestone with the release of their seventh Korean EP titled Cosmic.
TWICE: Unstoppable Comeback
The nonet TWICE was formed by JYP Entertainment in 2015 through the reality show Sixteen, consisting of Nayeon, Jihyo, Jeongyeon, Mina, Dahyun, Momo, Sana, Chaeyoung, and Tzuyu.
After nine incredible years in the industry, they have shown no signs of slowing down, with a remarkable six releases in 2024 alone:
- Pre-release single “I GOT YOU”
- 13th Korean EP With YOU-th
- Digital single “ONE SPARK”
- Fifth Japanese studio album Dive
- 14th EP Strategy
- Japanese single “The Wish”
Oh My Girl: Enchanting Sounds
Oh My Girl, launched by WM Entertainment in 2015, features six talented members: Hyojung, Mimi, YooA, Seunghee, Yubin, and Arin.
This past August, they released their 10th mini-album, Dreamy Resonance, which includes the title track “Classified.”
Dreamcatcher: A Unique Journey
Initially debuting as MINX in 2014, Dreamcatcher later rebranded after adding members Handong and Gahyun, solidifying their lineup in 2017. With original members JiU, Dami, SuA, Siyeon, and Yoohyeon, they have captivated fans worldwide.
In July 2024, they delighted fans by releasing their 10th EP, VirtuouS, featuring the poignant title track “Justice.”
HI CUTIE: The Duo Evolution
HI CUTIE made their debut as a kid group in 2017, showcasing an average age of just 12.6 years. While the original lineup saw many changes, the remaining members forged ahead as a duo.
This March, Yujin and Yunjeong released their heartfelt track “Fool, It’s Love.”
