The 9-1-1 franchise is branching out with a new spinoff that will be based in a different city, although the specific location has yet to be disclosed. Fans of the series are familiar with the original show, which is set in Los Angeles, California, and its first spinoff, 9-1-1: Lone Star, which takes place in Austin, Texas. With this in mind, the upcoming spinoff is expected to explore a new urban landscape, likely ruling out familiar settings from California and Texas.
The highly anticipated series finale of 9-1-1: Lone Star is scheduled to air on Monday, February 3, 2025, at 8 PM ET on Fox. In addition, the premiere of 9-1-1 Season 8 is set for Thursday, March 6, 2025, on ABC following a midseason break.
8 Honolulu
State: Hawai’i
Following the announcement of the new series, Hawai’i emerged as a top candidate for the spinoff’s filming location. According to Deadline, Hawai’i is viewed as a leading contender for the spinoff. However, since ABC has not yet officially approved the spinoff, this remains speculative. The idea of a series revolving around first responders in Hawai’i, especially in Honolulu—the most populous city on the islands—is particularly captivating.
Transitioning the 9-1-1 narrative to Hawai’i would present an opportunity to diversify the franchise’s emergency scenarios, with its unique volcanic landscapes and tropical climate potentially leading to different types of incidents. However, fans should remain cautious, as filming in Hawai’i is often cost-prohibitive; budget constraints were a factor in the cancellation of CBS’s NCIS: Hawai’i. Furthermore, executive producer Rashad Raisani hinted at an ideal city that isn’t overly represented in TV land during an interview with TheWrap, stating:
“We wanted to find a city that also wasn’t so well known by other TV franchises. With Seattle, you’re looking at the Grey’s Anatomy universe, and with Chicago, you’ve got the Dick Wolf universe. So we did a lot of strategizing about a city that, hopefully, is exciting in concept, but not so well known by many other TV shows and franchises. I think that the veil will come off of that pretty soon.”
7 Boston
State: Massachusetts
With the likelihood of Seattle, Chicago, or Hawai’i being discarded as potential locations for the new series, Boston, Massachusetts, could emerge as an exciting choice. Several characters from the existing show have ties to Boston. For instance, Eli Cobb, a firefighter paramedic who mentored Chimney at Station 118, operates in Boston, and Mac Brandt’s character was featured in flashbacks that connect to Maddie’s storyline.
Choosing Boston makes practical sense, as the connections present an opportunity for further exploration of established characters. Although it’s improbable that Maddie and Chimney would relocate to Boston before the conclusion of 9-1-1 Season 8, the producers could reintroduce Brandt’s character Eli in the spinoff.
6 Las Vegas
State: Nevada
The suggestion of a potential Las Vegas location for the new 9-1-1 spinoff was also mentioned in the Deadline report, highlighting it as an “emerging favorite”among the production team. Although no further updates have emerged regarding its candidacy as a location, it certainly remains a viable option.

Las Vegas has found its place in television as the backdrop for one of the most successful procedurals, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. However, with a decade passing since CSI’s conclusion, the city could be ripe for a fresh narrative focused on emergency services, as 9-1-1 and CSI offer distinct storytelling. This shift could even attract a new audience from the loyal fanbase of CSI.
5 Detroit
State: Michigan
If the 9-1-1 producers, including Ryan Murphy and Tim Minear, opt to pursue an entirely new direction for the series, Detroit, Michigan warrants consideration. While Chicago often steals the spotlight, the Midwest generally lacks representation in major TV shows despite being home to a large population and a wealth of stories.
Detroit’s diverse climate presents compelling opportunities for unique narratives within the 9-1-1 universe, especially given that it hasn’t been featured prominently in procedural dramas. This bustling city is alive with personality, making it an ideal candidate for the future of the franchise.
Furthermore, if ABC is eager to showcase the Midwest without resorting to rural storytelling, Detroit provides an urban setting full of potential. The cold winters could lead to engaging emergencies that reflect the area’s essence, particularly with the Canadian border nearby, broadening the scope of storytelling possibilities.
4 Twin Cities
State: Minnesota
Similar to Detroit, the Twin Cities—specifically the Minneapolis–Saint Paul metropolitan area—could offer an unexpected yet refreshing backdrop for the upcoming spinoff. This location hasn’t had much airtime in popular television, promising to bring a new vibe to the 9-1-1 franchise.
Similar to its Midwestern counterpart, the Twin Cities have diverse weather patterns that could lead to dramatic emergencies, paralleling what has been seen in past seasons of 9-1-1. Given the success of weather-driven disasters in previous seasons, this setting could be ripe for exploration within the new narrative.
3 Tampa
State: Florida
If the 9-1-1 spinoff’s producers lean away from the Midwest, they might consider venturing down to the Southeast. While many shows often choose Miami as a backdrop, Tampa, Florida, remains underrepresented in the entertainment industry, despite being a large urban area with plenty of storyline potential.
With its coastal environment, Tampa could present a blizzard of unique emergencies, from hurricanes to more whimsical incidents that could arise from beach life. Although the Floridian climate is reminiscent of Southern California, differences in local culture and environment would add a distinctive flavor to the 9-1-1 universe.
2 Denver
State: Colorado
Should ABC desire to veer from settling in the Midwest and Southwest, they might find solace in a mountainous location like Denver, Colorado. This vibrant city boasts a population exceeding 700,000, surrounded by stunning peaks, offering a unique opportunity for diverse and thrilling storylines within the 9-1-1 franchise.
Denver opens the door to new narratives, as its distinctive climate, geographical features, and cultural elements could all present compelling challenges and situations specific to the area. The potential stories stemming from this locale can significantly enrich the franchise’s narrative landscape as 9-1-1: Lone Star reaches its conclusion.
1 Anchorage
State: Alaska
If producers Ryan Murphy and Tim Minear are seeking a truly original direction for the 9-1-1 series, Anchorage, Alaska, could be an exhilarating option. This locale features a climate vastly different from other potential settings and is often overlooked by Hollywood, even though nearly 300,000 inhabitants call it home. The breathtaking scenery around Anchorage could create a captivating atmosphere for a new iteration of the franchise.
Additionally, the specific daylight patterns experienced in Alaska add further complexity to the storytelling, enhancing the drama amid its beautiful yet challenging landscapes.
With its unique cultural aspects and distinct living conditions compared to California and Texas, Alaska could diversify the narratives within the 9-1-1 universe. The freshness of Anchorage, combined with its challenges, could invite a broader array of characters and emergencies, enriching the show’s landscape even further.
