The isekai genre has seemingly taken over the anime landscape for nearly ten years, with at least half a dozen new series debuting each season. Despite its enormous popularity, the genre often faces criticism, as many consider isekai anime to be uninspired and catering to mainstream tastes. Nonetheless, a few standout titles have emerged that have received commendable recognition, with Re:Zero -Starting Life in Another World- leading the way.
Now into its third season, Re:Zero is nothing short of ambitious and provocative, frequently pushing boundaries and presenting its main characters in less than flattering ways. The storytelling is also unique, rewarding viewers who exhibit patience. Notably, there are very few isekai series like Re:Zero, and while it has left a mark, its impact on the genre as a whole remains limited. However, several anime may resonate with fans of Subaru’s remarkable journey.
6 Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation
A Dark Fantasy with Exceptional World-Building and Character Development
Mushoku Tensei is often mentioned alongside Re:Zero as another “mature”isekai story that dives into darker themes, and it’s an assessment that holds water. However, while both shows excel in similar aspects, they offer distinct experiences overall. The series features some of the most intricate world-building in the genre, introducing diverse magic systems, cultures, and races with each new arc.
Like Re:Zero, Mushoku Tensei is bold in its execution, even dedicating a sequel season to the lives of characters within a magic academy with minimal action. The protagonist, Rudy, embarks on a personal growth journey, transforming from a morally questionable individual into a more honorable character, akin to Subaru. Both characters share a backstory as shut-ins in their former lives, although Subaru possesses a stronger moral compass.
5 The Weakest Tamer Began a Journey to Pick Up Trash
A Slow-Life Isekai Featuring a Charming Protagonist and Stunning Visuals
The Weakest Tamer Began a Journey to Pick Up Trash is a relatively overlooked isekai anime that captivates with its visual allure and engaging narrative. Its animation quality rivals that of Re:Zero, delivering a movie-like experience in many instances.
Rather than emphasizing traditional isekai elements, the show presents viewers with the tale of Ivy, a protagonist forced to flee her village after being marked for death, perceived as a worthless zero-star Tamer. Her journey in the wilderness leads her to forge bonds with both monsters and fellow villagers, all while grappling with the lessons from her past life.
4 As a Reincarnated Aristocrat, I’ll Use My Appraisal Skill to Rise in the World
A Protagonist Who Unites Others
Subaru may be flawed, but he comes to understand his weaknesses. Hence, his true strength lies in elevating others—be it Emilia, Rem, or Beatrice. Similarly, As a Reincarnated Aristocrat, I’ll Use My Appraisal Skill to Rise in the World features a protagonist whose true value stems from his unique ability to recognize potential in others.
Ars possesses the ability to visually assess the skills and stats of people, empowering him to form alliances strategically. As he navigates a politically charged ambiance poised for warfare, he dedicates his efforts to assembling a team capable of changing the tide in their favor.
3 Grimgar: Ashes and Illusions
Ordinary Lives in an Extraordinary Landscape
Grimgar stands out, especially evident within its light novel. A group of individuals awakens in a foreign fantasy land without memories, grappling with their disorientation. They wisely choose to unite as a party to enhance their chances of surviving encounters with goblins.
While isekai often indulges in power fantasies, Grimgar offers a refreshing twist by spotlighting characters who must navigate survival without relying on overpowered abilities, setting it apart from typical series in the genre.
2 KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World!
A NEET Receives a Second Chance, and Hilarity Ensues
It’s important to note that while KonoSuba has a vastly different tone from Re:Zero, it remains a worthy recommendation. This series parodies the isekai genre, filled with quirky, often negatively portrayed characters, yet still retains their likability. It notably deviates from the intense psychological themes of Re:Zero.
However, there are parallels. Both Kazuma and Subaru begin as NEETs, and neither possess overwhelming strength. They continuously strive to earn the trust of others and often end up in chaotic parties or face political dilemmas. Kazuma even experiences mortality of his own, only to be resurrected by a goddess—a comical twist not entirely out of place amidst action-packed sequences.
1 Now and Then, Here and There
A Dark Tale of War and Sacrifice
A hidden gem, Now and Then, Here and There may be hard to find but is an excellent choice for those seeking a mature and dark take on isekai. Much like Subaru, Shuu becomes embroiled in a fantasy realm while attempting to shield a blue-haired girl who is perpetually endangered due to her potential power.
Similar to Subaru, Shuu is both naive and resolute, striving to embody the hero archetype, no matter how ill-equipped he is. This series poignantly shatters his youthful ideals throughout a harrowing narrative that includes themes of suffering, political oppression, and heartfelt sorrow.
Special Mention: Time Travel Anime
Some of the best anime similar to Re:Zero aren’t necessarily isekai titles. One fundamental aspect that distinguishes the series from others is Subaru’s unique “Return by Death”mechanic, allowing him to rewind time. While not commonly found in isekai, a handful of time travel narratives embrace comparable themes.
