Toys Ruin Iconic Songs from the ‘Wicked’ Movie Adaptation

With the highly anticipated release of the Wicked film—helmed by director Jon M. Chu and based on the popular Broadway musical—just around the corner, excitement is ramping up as the press tour kicks off.

Promotional trailers have launched, and stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, who portray the lead characters Elphaba and Glinda, are engaging in interviews, while Wicked-themed audios trend on TikTok. This is the typical buzz for a successful promotional campaign.

As Wicked is a musical with beloved songs, it’s no surprise that audiences are eager for the movie’s official soundtrack, which features the cast’s renditions of these iconic pieces. Although fans have only had a taste through brief snippets in trailers, the full soundtrack is expected to drop on November 22, coinciding with the film’s release. However, there may be an opportunity to listen to some of the music sooner, thanks to promotional toys linked to the film.

A film of Wicked’s scale naturally attracts a substantial merchandise rollout, which is already gracing the shelves of major retailers across the United States. From a partnership with Stanley to a diverse selection of toys, the range is impressive. What might catch fans off-guard, however, is that certain toys actually include longer snippets of songs that audiences are itching to hear.

Additionally, videos of a karaoke toy microphone have surfaced online, featuring a significant portion of a popular song for fans to sing along to.

This strategy is intriguing, especially so close to the official soundtrack’s launch. It appears to be aimed at building excitement for the movie’s music, yet two of its most well-known tracks are already easily accessible on various social media platforms. Nonetheless, experiencing these songs in their entirety in a theater will provide a completely different thrill that I eagerly anticipate.
