“Transformed My Past Trauma” — Challenge Star Cara Maria Sorbello Exposes Laurel Stucky’s “Mimicking of Past Abuse”

The Challenge Season 40 aired its fifth episode on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, featuring a heated confrontation between Laurel Stucky and Cara Maria Sorbello. The altercation escalated to the point where Cara Maria was left in tears, leading to security personnel intervening to separate the two contestants.

Following the episode’s broadcast, Cara Maria took to TikTok to share her emotional reaction and provide insights into what was omitted from the final edit. In a detailed nine-minute video, she described how the argument commenced and the remarks made by Laurel that triggered her emotional outburst.

“In essence, she mimicked past abuse that I have endured while towering over me and screaming at me, saying ‘I had your back when—’ she basically weaponized my past trauma, pulled it out of nowhere,”Cara Maria shared.

The Challenge Season 40 star elaborated that Laurel provoked “something deep”within her that she wasn’t aware existed, which ultimately caused her to break down.

In her TikTok update, Cara Maria provided clarity on her dispute with Laurel Stucky, stressing that Laurel’s actions were a deliberate manipulation of her past traumas. She expressed that Laurel “lit”a metaphorical bomb during their argument.

Cara explained that when Laurel yelled at her and referenced her past experiences while “mimicking”them, it brought forth a reaction she described as “unleashing Cara Maria.”This led her to enter “another mental state.”

“It’s one thing to yell and say, ‘Oh, you’re worthless, nobody likes you, I’m never going to be your friend or what would I—’ that’s fine and I can deal with that all day,”she explained.

However, she pointed out that it crossed a line when Laurel chose to “weaponize abusive trauma”from Cara’s past during their confrontation. Cara Maria expressed that Laurel nearly reenacted her traumatic experiences, causing her to emotionally “black out”and sob “even more uncontrollably.”

She commended her fellow cast members for showering her with support after the heated altercation, describing it as “such a beautiful feeling.”While she criticized Laurel’s behavior, she acknowledged that Laurel would always be who she is, and that, in itself, was “punishment enough.”

Following the incident, security kept a close watch on Laurel for several days to ensure she maintained her distance from Cara Maria. Cara disclosed that she requested to speak to a therapist due to the “visceral triggering reaction”she experienced.

While reflecting on comments from other cast members about her dynamics with Laurel, including Johnny Bananas drawing parallels between the two as “sisters,”Cara noted that both are only children and that their treatment of one another was not reflective of healthy sisterly behavior. “Sisters”typically have “good intentions”for each other, which she felt was absent in their relationship.

“Her intentions are to keep me down, to keep me below her, to play games with my head, to manipulate me, which I think was another reason why she would bring up such a horrible moment in my life, one of my lowest moments,”Cara Maria stated.

The Challenge Season 40 star labeled Laurel as a “liar”and a “hypocrite,”particularly regarding Laurel’s comments about Michele Fitzgerald and their future friendship. Cara expressed that her gripes with the Survivor alum stemmed from Michele voting her into elimination years prior, yet Laurel failed to understand why Cara was upset about her own voting choice in episode 1.
