Lindsay Walter, a cisgender marathon runner diagnosed with alopecia universalis, claims she experienced a shocking outburst of transphobia in a women’s restroom.
She shared her harrowing experience on X, previously known as Twitter. The details are undeniably distressing. Walter recounted being in an airport restroom when a woman yelled, “You’re disgusting!” at her. Walter responded, “I am a woman; I just don’t have hair,” to which the woman dismissed her with a curt, “Whatever, just get away.”

This distressing event left Walter understandably shaken. She expressed her emotions by stating, “I am sad, mad, embarrassed, heartbroken, and just overwhelmed. I typically try to see the best in people and show kindness, but I’m really struggling to do that right now.”
Her account garnered significant support from the transgender community. Trans TV personality India Willoughby reacted with shock, stating, “Shocking. So sorry Lindsay.” Many commentators pointed out that this incident exemplifies how transphobia can negatively impact all women, not just cisgender individuals.

However, shortly after, critics began probing into Walter’s previous tweets, leading some to express a lack of empathy, noting her past remarks where she referred to trans women as “males.” In a now-removed tweet from September 2024, she stated, “I 100% agree males should not be playing against females,” while discussing being mistaken for a man due to her hair loss.
Numerous users have cited this comment against Walter, arguing that the woman she encountered at the airport adhered to a similar mindset. This narrative has made its rounds on the prominent Reddit forum r/LeopardsAteMyFace not just once, but twice within the last three days.
In light of the backlash, Walter released a statement yesterday, affirming, “I still firmly believe that biological men shouldn’t compete against women. I didn’t deserve what transpired in that bathroom, and it’s not karma. I firmly stand by the teachings of God and what’s morally right.”
110% stand on my message that biological men shouldn’t be playing against women. I didn’t deserve what happened to me in the bathroom and it isn’t karma. I know what God has taught us and what is right and I will stand firm on that. Living for an audience of one.

Nevertheless, research indicates that individuals who undergo male-to-female gender transition do not possess competitive advantages over cisgender women. Additionally, there raise concerns about potential severe violations of privacy that would be necessary for athletes to demonstrate they are not transgender. A world where genital examinations precede sports events is an abhorrent notion—yet some advocate this for children’s sports. It is unfortunate that Walter has not reflected on these complexities. What she experienced was appalling and never should have occurred, a reality that holds true irrespective of her being a trans or cisgender woman.
