As the deranged android antagonist of both Prometheus and Covenant, David’s storyline has sparked intrigue and speculation for nearly a decade. Although he has not been seen since the conclusion of Covenant, there are fresh opportunities for the franchise to revisit his character and provide clarity on his dark motives.
There’s a new film in the works, directed by Ridley Scott, which is expected to delve deeper into David’s narrative arc. However, the announcement of this project indicates it may take years before it reaches the audience. Compounding this situation, Scott’s other commitments, including Gladiator III and a Bee Gees biopic, could potentially delay the advancement of the new Alien film even further. Fortunately, two significant avenues may allow David’s return well ahead of the anticipated continuation of Scott’s prequel trilogy.
Alien: Earth’s Timeline Connection to Prometheus Makes David’s Cameo Possible
David May Have Sent the Ship That Triggers Alien: Earth’s Xenomorph Invasion
The forthcoming FX series Alien: Earth offers the first substantial opportunity for David’s story to be revisited. Set in 2120, this series occurs two years prior to the original Alien film, thus creating a potential timeline connection. Following the events of Covenant, which took place in 2104, David had resolved to proceed with his mission towards Origae-6. It’s plausible that after conducting further experiments with the black goo and xenomorphs, David redirected his course towards Earth, potentially arriving just in time for the events of Alien: Earth.
Furthermore, David could be integral to explaining how xenomorphs ultimately arrived on Earth. The official synopsis for Alien: Earth describes a “mysterious space vessel crash-landing on Earth,” which could hint at David’s involvement, whether directly or indirectly. This mysterious ship could potentially belong to David or, at the very least, be launched under his influence, effectively linking the new series back to the established lore of Prometheus and Covenant.
However, while a cameo from David may be theoretically possible, it seems less likely. Creator Noah Hawley might opt to explore a storyline that does not require reliance on the Prometheus trilogy, favoring innovation over direct references to Covenant. If Fassbender’s character were to appear, the more likely scenario could involve him portraying another synthetic similar to David or Walter.

David May Seek the Black Goo on the Corbelan
By the finale of Alien: Romulus, the Corbelan still harbored remnants of the black goo when Rain entered hypersleep. Kay’s body likely remains on board, along with sealed vials previously uncovered by Rain, Andy, and Tyler. Given the proximity of the Yvaga system to Origae-6, it is entirely feasible that David learns of the black goo samples aboard the Corbelan, prompting him to search for them. Having potentially exhausted his own supply, he might require additional samples to sustain his obsessive research.
Alien Might Sidestep David’s Return, but Prometheus & Covenant’s Impact Remains
Prometheus & Covenant’s Relevance to Alien, Even If David’s Arc Lingers Open
Should neither Alien: Earth nor the sequel to Alien: Romulus explicitly feature David, it is reassuring to note that the legacies of Prometheus and Covenant will not be disregarded. Despite Covenant‘s underwhelming box office performance, the franchise appeared to steer clear of abandoning its rich narrative. After the emphasis on black goo in Romulus, the continued acknowledgment of Prometheus and Covenant within the series signifies their ongoing relevance. No matter the trajectory of the Alien franchise, Michael Fassbender’s portrayal of David has undeniably left an enduring impression.
