Two Wolverine Alternatives in the MCU I’d Prefer Over Hugh Jackman’s Original Character

Two Wolverine Alternatives in the MCU I’d Prefer Over Hugh Jackman’s Original Character

Warning: This article contains spoilers for What If…? season 3, episode 8, “What If… What If?”.

The conclusion of What If…? season 3 has opened the door to two intriguing Wolverine variants in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) that could potentially outshine Hugh Jackman’s legendary portrayal of the character. Over three seasons, the animated series presented an array of imaginative multiverse variants, suggesting that audiences have only begun to scratch the surface of the multiverse’s creative possibilities. The final moments of the third season’s eighth episode, “What If… What If?”not only hinted at the potential of Wolverine variants but also introduced a new version of the fan-favorite mutant.

Wolverine, also known as James “Logan”Howlett, is one of the most beloved figures in the Marvel Comics universe. His portrayal by Hugh Jackman in 2000’s X-Men marked the character’s explosive entry into live-action films, solidifying his popularity. Since Disney acquired 20th Century Fox in 2019, speculations surrounding the future casting of Wolverine in the MCU have been rampant, particularly after Jackman’s much-anticipated return. As we look towards the future, two variants have emerged that I’d love to see featured prominently in the MCU events to come.

The MCU Faces a Significant Challenge in Replacing Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine

As Marvel Studios looks to recast this iconic role, they face the daunting task of filling big shoes. Jackman has beautifully embodied Wolverine through eleven feature films over 24 years, a feat that showcases both his acting prowess and the character’s deep connection with fans. Numerous actors have been suggested as potential successors, including Taron Egerton, Daniel Radcliffe, and Zac Efron. However, the exact vision Marvel will employ for Wolverine in the upcoming X-Men reboot remains unclear. Regardless of the timeline for recasting, I hope to see the two alternate Wolverine variants have a significant presence in Phase 6.

Henry Cavill’s Wolverine Variant Was One of 2024’s Most Exciting Moments

Deadpool & Wolverine Introduced a New Actor to the Role

For over two decades, only Hugh Jackman and briefly Troye Sivan in X-Men Origins: Wolverine have portrayed Wolverine in live-action. This changed with Deadpool & Wolverine, where viewers were astounded to see Henry Cavill, previously known for his Superman role, debut as a Wolverine variant. Cavill’s appearance has been hailed as one of the most unforgettable moments not only of 2024 but throughout the MCU. Unfortunately, he didn’t receive substantial screen time or character development in this Phase 5 project.

While I believe that casting Henry Cavill as the primary version of Wolverine might not be the ideal choice, I am keen to see how his variant, affectionately called “the Cavillrine”by fans, can be developed before the conclusion of the Multiverse Saga. Future films, such as Phase 6’s Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars, could provide a perfect setting for this more rugged and battle-hardened version of Wolverine to shine. However, he’s not the sole Wolverine I hope will return to the screen.

What If…? Introduced Another Wolverine Variant I Want to See in Secret Wars

What If…? Brought to Light a Unique Wolverine Variant

Thanosverine cameo in What If...? season 3

The final episode of What If…? season 3 introduced an unexpected variant, merging Wolverine with the Mad Titan Thanos. This surprising blend left many questions unanswered: how did Thanos become Wolverine? Is he a hero or a villain? The enigma surrounding this bizarre Wolverine variant captures my imagination and demonstrates just how much potential exists within the multiverse.

Regardless of whether Hugh Jackman returns in Avengers: Secret Wars, I strongly advocate for either the Cavillrine or the recently unveiled Thanosverine to leave their mark on the MCU. It’s disappointing that Thanos’ Wolverine was not further developed in What If…?, but the sprawling narrative of Secret Wars offers a perfect opportunity to delve deeper into this unique character. It feels unjust that this intriguing Wolverine variant has not received adequate attention, yet Marvel Studios has the chance to rectify that oversight.
