Rapper Tyler, the Creator is poised to appear in A24’s upcoming film Marty Supreme, sharing the screen with renowned actors Timothée Chalamet and Gwyneth Paltrow. This marks the American rapper’s debut feature film role and also Paltrow’s first returning onscreen appearance since her role in Avengers: Endgame in 2019.
Details surrounding Marty Supreme are still largely undisclosed; however, the film is rumored to be a fictionalized account of the life of professional ping pong player Marty Reisman. For those unfamiliar, Reisman began his career as a hustler and went on to secure 22 major ping pong titles from 1946 to 2002, becoming a world champion in the process.
While comprehensive details about Marty Supreme are limited, it has been confirmed that Josh Safdie, known for Uncut Gems, will direct the film. Safdie will collaborate with producers Eli Bush, Anthony Katagas, Ronald Bronstein, and Timothée Chalamet under the A24 banner.
The cast of Marty Supreme has been officially confirmed by Variety, including Tyler, the Creator, Chalamet, and Paltrow. Outside of her roles in the Avengers and Iron Man franchise, Paltrow has also starred in Shakespeare in Love and Netflix’s The Politician. Chalamet, meanwhile, has gained critical acclaim through his performances in films such as Wonka, Dune, and Call Me By Your Name. Tyler, the Creator is recognized primarily for his music career and has received the Grammy for Best Rap Album twice.
Tyler, the Creator Expands His Acting Portfolio with Marty Supreme
Six years after Tyler, the Creator referenced Timothée Chalamet in his song Okra with the line “Tell Tim Chalamet to come get at me,”they will finally collaborate on a film. Though primarily celebrated for his music, Marty Supreme is not Tyler’s first foray into acting.
He has made appearances in several television shows and films, taking on minor and guest roles. Notably, he lent his voice to Korblox Deathspeaker in the 2014 adventure comedy Roblox: The Movie. In 2022, he portrayed Stone Block #3972 in The Sinister SMP. Furthermore, Tyler was a main cast member of Loiter Squad, a live-action comedy sketch series that aired on Adult Swim from 2012 to 2014. He also voiced the character Liborg in Axe Cop, an adult animated series based on the webcomic.
His other television appearances include playing Cornell in Kidding for two episodes, alongside episodic voice roles in shows like Uncle Grandpa, Big Mouth, and Doug and Dog. Additionally, Tyler made a memorable guest appearance alongside Mindy Kaling in The Mindy Project in January 2013, where he encouraged fans to “Always recycle, okay? Plastic and paper. We need to save our environment. See you guys later!”
Tyler also co-created the animated sitcom The Jellies! with Lionel Boyce. This adult animated series, which ran for two seasons on Adult Swim from 2017 to 2019, follows a human boy adopted by a family of jellyfish.
