Ubisoft has officially postponed the release of Assassin’s Creed Shadows to next year. The company has also decided to eliminate its seasonal model and will offer the first expansion at no cost. However, with the recent announcement of Ghost of Yōtei, it raises questions about potential impacts on sales. Both games fall under the action-adventure genre and are set in the captivating backdrop of Feudal Japan.
During a recent conference call (transcription provided by VGC), CEO Yves Guillemot commented, “I would like to say that there’s a lot of space for very high-quality games, and those two games can sell very well.”
Chief Financial Officer Frederick Duguet revealed that the development team is focused on delivering a “fantastic experience.” He stated, “Regarding the competition for Assassin’s Creed Shadows, our priority is to ensure we provide an exceptional experience, featuring a dual protagonist approach with contrasting and complementary gameplay styles involving Yasuke and Naoe, all set in intriguing Feudal Japan.”
“Thus, our decision to delay the game is driven by the need to polish it and fulfill our promise of excellence,” he added.
With Sony confirming there will be no major franchise titles released before April 2025, Assassin’s Creed Shadows should have ample market space to thrive. It remains to be seen whether the additional development time will result in a more robust launch compared to Star Wars Outlaws.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows is scheduled for release on February 14th for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC. This game also signifies the return of Ubisoft titles to Steam as day-one releases. Be sure to check back for more updates in the upcoming months.
