Fans are eagerly awaiting Uglies 2, especially after the first movie received a lukewarm response when it premiered on Netflix on September 13, 2024. This dystopian science fiction film, directed by Joseph McGinty Nichol, is adapted from Scott Westerfeld’s 2006 novel of the same name.
Uglies is the opening book in Westerfeld’s trilogy, succeeded by Pretties and Specials. The author later added a fourth installment titled Extras. Given this extensive material, fans are optimistic about Uglies 2, but official confirmation is still pending.
The first film concluded with a cliffhanger that left viewers eager to discover Tally Youngblood’s fate after she transforms into one of the ‘Pretties’. In an interview with That Hashtag Show on September 10, 2024, when asked about the possibility of a sequel, Scott Westerfeld responded,
“Yeah I mean I have always thought in trilogies that’s how I work, so um although this is I think it’s a complete movie and a great film but it is you know, it is calling for the other two.”
If Uglies 2 is developed, it’s likely that actors Joey King, Brianne Tju, Keith Powers, Laverne Cox, and Jan Luis Castellanos will reprise their roles.
The Future of Uglies 2 Rests on Audience Reception
As of now, there is no official announcement from Netflix regarding the release of Uglies 2. However, if the storyline from Scott Westerfeld’s trilogy is followed, the sequel will likely be titled Pretties.
In September 2020, Netflix acquired the rights to the original novel. The filming for the first installment concluded in late 2021, although additional reshoots were needed in 2024 before its release.
Given the production timeline for Uglies, it may take a few years for a sequel to reach audiences. Joey King discussed this with Screen Rant on September 11, 2024, saying,
“There’s more books. I’m not saying much right now. We’re recited for people to see this one, and we’re excited for the future of these characters and to see what people enjoy.”
At present, Uglies boasts a rating of 5.0/10 on IMDb and 17% on Rotten Tomatoes. The creation of Uglies 2 will heavily depend on how well the first film performs and Netflix’s decision to develop this into a potential franchise.
What to Anticipate in Uglies 2?
Uglies closely follows the central narrative of the novel, depicting a dystopian future where humans have exhausted natural resources. To provide power, scientists have genetically engineered modified orchids.
In this world, every individual is deemed unattractive at birth and must undergo surgery to transform into a beautiful being to join the elite society of “Pretties”.
Tally, the protagonist, resists this surgery at the age of sixteen, aware that it reduces mental capacity for better control, as seen with her friend Peris. As she rebels against the oppressive regime, she finds friendship with David.
The movie diverges slightly from the book with the fate of Peris, who suffers a fall in the film’s conclusion, a detail not included in the novel. Thus, viewers may see the ruthless super soldier return if Uglies 2 becomes a reality. Tally’s decision to let Dr. Cable make her a ‘Pretty’ to test Mandy’s cure paves the way for Scott’s subsequent book Pretties, which picks up right where the first film left off.
The sequel will follow Tally’s journey in her new society, under the scrutiny of the Crims. Zane, the Crims’ leader, becomes suspicious of Tally’s past but their paths entangle in a complex romance, complicating Tally’s history and prospects.
If Pretties is adapted to film, audiences can expect an array of plot twists, expanding Scott Westerfeld’s literary universe.
