In his later years, he sought solitude and chose to live in a small cabin he owned on Mount Baldy, California, starting in the 1980s. Embracing a minimalistic lifestyle, he distanced himself from material possessions and lived with only essential needs.

Jack was known for his kind-hearted nature and was well-liked in his community, often receiving support from his neighbors. Despite facing a disability in his later years, he remained active in his local circle.

By the late 1990s, Jack contemplated relocating to the town of Upland, successfully purchasing a two-story house for $159,000 in February 1999. However, his intended move took a dire turn when the 71-year-old war veteran seemingly vanished on September 13, 1999. A missing persons report was filed by his acquaintances, but the authorities struggled to uncover any leads.

However, they allegedly lacked immediate funds, and Jack allowed them to occupy the cabin while covering the mortgage. In a troubling twist, he also transferred his financial assets to them and signed a document permitting Judy and Marcia possession of the cabin in the event of his death. He even granted them access to his bank accounts.
