Overwatch 2 has initiated testing phases for 6v6 matches, marking a significant moment that many fans have eagerly anticipated. Currently, the first test phase is live, with additional tests planned for early 2025.
The call for a return to 6v6 gameplay in Overwatch 2 has gained substantial traction, especially since the switch to 5v5 was one of the more contentious adjustments made at the game’s release. While this change was welcomed by some long-time players, it did create a sense of loss for others, especially those nostalgic for the original Overwatch structure.
Understanding Overwatch 2’s 6v6 Test Phases
Blizzard Entertainment is cautiously reintroducing the 6v6 format that was left behind in prior updates. Two new testing periods have been confirmed: one is currently underway and the other set to launch soon, giving players a unique opportunity to contribute to the evolution of the game. The ongoing test incorporates a Role Queue feature, which locks two players into each designated role. The next phase, launching on January 7, will adopt a different approach called Min 1, Max 3, potentially allowing for 1-3 players in each role during matches. The Overwatch: Classic mode provides a preliminary experience of the 6v6 format, engaging fans as they contribute to potential changes.
Ongoing 6v6 Tests Since December 17
The current phase, which began on December 17, showcases the Role Queue within the Unranked menu and will remain accessible until January 6. Several characters have undergone balance adjustments specifically for this mode. Health and damage values have generally increased, while armor metrics have decreased. Additionally, the base regeneration timer for each character has been extended from 5 seconds to 7 seconds.
Keller has indicated that the next test iteration will provide “greater freedom of hero choice”while maintaining balanced team compositions. This suggests a focus on equipping teams with diverse heroes to promote engagement while avoiding imbalance. The current Role Queue format aims to establish strict adherence to balance, but the forthcoming Min 1, Max 3 test is designed to alleviate historical queue time challenges.
Feedback regarding the 6v6 experiments has yielded mixed reactions, with a notable portion of the community responding positively. Nonetheless, there are concerns surrounding the balancing adjustments, particularly related to the Tank class, which some players believe might have a negative impact on gameplay dynamics. The Support class has also faced scrutiny due to its recent changes and the challenges it presents within a 6v6 environment. Overall, these tests have been described as adding a chaotic element to gameplay, appealing to some players while frustrating others.
Upcoming Test Mode in Overwatch 2
The next phase of testing is scheduled to commence on January 21 and will run through February. Described by Keller as reminiscent of the “Quick Play Hacked”mode introduced in previous seasons, this test will experiment with uneven role representation. The community’s response, particularly on social media, will be crucial in determining the future of the 6v6 format, as will the backend functionality to ensure smooth gameplay and reduced queue times.
