Embarking on the Journey – Discovering Aincrad
The Creator of Aincrad Unveils the Fatal Implications of This New VRMMO
The narrative of Sword Art Online introduces us to its main character, Kazuto Kirigaya. This is merely his real-world identity, as within the game and amongst friends, he is known as Kirito—derived from combining “Kiri”from Kirigaya and “To”from “Kazuto.”A dedicated gamer, he is a fervent admirer of the developer behind the highly anticipated new game, Sword Art Online.
Created by Akihiko Kayaba and his team, the cutting-edge VR technology known as NerveGear enables players to engage in “Full-Dive”VR, granting an astonishingly realistic experience in Aincrad’s world, allowing them to savor virtual meals, inhale the scent of blooming flowers, and even experience in-game pain. As a beta tester, Kirito is eager as the much-awaited launch day finally arrives.
However, nothing could prepare Kirito for the grim reality awaiting him upon the game’s launch. When attempting to log out, he confronts a shocking truth: the log-out option has vanished, leaving all players trapped in Aincrad. Removing the NerveGear will result in their deaths. Hence, one of the most notorious phrases in pop culture emerges: dying in the game equates to dying in real life.
If I die in the game, I’ll die in real life!

Ascending the Levels of Aincrad
Players Confront the Harsh Reality of This Fatal Game
The anime reveals that Kirito had reached Floor 8 during the Beta phase. In line with traditional MMOs, players must defeat a floor’s final boss before advancing. This scenario starkly illustrates the life-and-death stakes of this “death game.”Players argue over the lack of assistance from the beta testers, whose insufficient guidance has led to the unfortunate demise of around 2,000 players, despite 10,000 copies of the game being sold.
Following intense discussions, players unite to defeat the floor boss in hopes of progressing further and ultimately escaping the game. It is through this alliance that Kirito first meets Asuna, who becomes not only his partner for that boss raid but also a pivotal figure in his continued journey through Sword Art Online. Initially, Asuna is hesitant and lacks the support of friends, unfamiliar with the MMO dynamics.
I’d rather stay the way I am until the last moment. Even if a monster beats me and I die, I won’t lose to this game or this world.

MMOs Offer a True Multiplayer Experience
Characters Realize the Importance (and Risks) of Teamwork
Time passes before Kirito and Asuna collaborate again, during which Kirito encounters both hope and despair. He shares that he once joined a guild aiming to be a cooperative player, but a tragic turn of events led to the demise of his team members. This experience turned him into a solo player, though he often meets other players who leave a lasting impression on him.
Upon reuniting, Asuna and Kirito delve into a threatening mystery jeopardizing SAO players’ safety—a significant moment prompting them to scrutinize the game’s mechanics. Their initial friction gives way to a deeper connection as they face life-threatening challenges. This bond solidifies when they express their feelings for each other and decide to marry, retreating together to a secluded cabin.
Eventually, after numerous adventures, including adopting an AI program as their “daughter,”they return to their frontline duties. Following a devastating battle on Floor 75, the mastermind behind SAO, Akihito Kayaba—who surprisingly led the main boss raid team—confronts Kirito. He grants him an opportunity for freedom by challenging him to a duel where Kirito must beat him, a feat that Kayaba had previously failed to achieve.
I’ll win no matter what.
Is This the Conclusion of Aincrad?
Kirito Faces Kayaba in the Ultimate Showdown
Understanding how virtually invincible Kayaba has made himself, Kirito contemplates the foolishness of their duel but still chooses to fight. As the battle progresses and Kayaba prepares to strike the final blow, Asuna sacrifices herself to save Kirito. Fueled by rage, Kirito rises to overcome Kayaba’s formidable power and ultimately triumphs. He is then transported to a new location, where Kayaba reveals that he has liberated all players and outlines his genuine intentions behind the Aincrad experiment. In a touching reunion, Kirito discovers Asuna’s survival, igniting his determination to find her in the real world. Thus, the arc concludes with Kirito, though weakened, setting forth on his quest to reunite with Asuna.
