Understanding the Buendía Family Tree in One Hundred Years of Solitude

Note: This article contains minor SPOILERS for season 1 of One Hundred Years of Solitude.

The first season of One Hundred Years of Solitude concludes in a way that only encompasses the initial half of Gabriel García Márquez’s acclaimed novel. Consequently, the family dynamics presented in the series are less intricate than those in the original text. Anticipated for the next installment, season 2, is an expansion of the comprehensive family tree, introducing subsequent generations of the Buendía lineage. Currently, with a central focus on José Arcadio Buendía, the show presents three vital generations essential for grasping the essence of Márquez’s timeless narrative.

Jose Arcadio Buendia (Marco Gonzalez & Diego Vasquez)

The Patriarch and Founder of Macondo

José Arcadio Buendía emerges as the founder of the fictional town of Macondo and the patriarch of the Buendía family. He begins his journey in his hometown where he marries his cousin, Úrsula. Their union is shrouded in superstition, as Úrsula’s family fears their offspring may be born with deformities. After a prolonged period of avoiding intimacy, the couple is pushed to act following a confrontation during a chicken fighting match, which leads José to commit a violent act against Prudencio Aguilar, a man who insulted him. This event haunts José, driving him from his home.

As an imaginative dreamer, José Arcadio Buendía becomes increasingly absorbed in his workshop, dedicating his life to the exploration of various sciences such as alchemy and astronomy. His relentless pursuit of knowledge often results in his absence from family life, much to Úrsula’s dismay. His goal to establish a new home for his family further drives him to venture into the unknown, facing numerous challenges along the way.

Ursula Iguarán (Susana Morales & Marleyda Soto)

José Arcadio Buendía’s Wife & Family Matriarch

As the matriarch of the Buendía family, Úrsula Iguarán plays a critical role in the establishment of Macondo alongside her husband. She navigates the complexities of motherhood, giving birth to three children, including the notable Colonel Aureliano Buendía, who is heralded as the first native of Macondo. Despite her strength and entrepreneurial spirit—starting a candy-making business to support the community—Úrsula struggles with her fear of inherited deformities due to her cousin marriage.

Jose Arcadio (Edgar Vittorino)

Firstborn Son of José Arcadio Buendía

Distinguished from his father, José Arcadio is the eldest son of José Arcadio Buendía and Úrsula Iguarán. His youth is marked by a passionate romance with Pilar Ternera, leading to a complicated relationship that results in fatherhood at an early age. Strikingly impulsive, much like his father, José Arcadio chooses to flee Macondo shortly after learning of his impending fatherhood.

Colonel Aureliano Buendia (Claudio Cataño)

Secondborn Son of José Arcadio Buendía

Colonel Aureliano Buendía, another central character, stands out as a prophetic figure from a young age, often demonstrating premonitions of events. His journey intertwines with themes of violence and rebellion, which are deftly encapsulated in the opening line of Márquez’s narrative:

“Many years later, as he faced the firing squad, Colonel Aureliano Buendía was to remember that distant afternoon when his father took him to discover ice.”

In addition to his military exploits, Aureliano is drawn to the arts, notably developing a talent for poetry. His character embodies both internal conflict and an enduring connection to his family legacy, paralleling that of his father, José Arcadio Buendía.

Amaranta Buendia (Loren Sofia Paz)

Firstborn daughter of José Arcadio Buendía

Amaranta Buendía represents a complex character whose relationships often reflect her struggles with love. Raised alongside her adopted sister Rebeca, their rivalry heats up when both are captivated by the outsider Pietro Crespi. The meaning behind her name, related to the Spanish verb for “to love,”stands in stark contrast to her challenges with romantic attachments after her affair with Pietro.

Rebecca (Akima Maldonado)

José Arcadio Buendía’s Adopted Daughter

Rebeca in One Hundred Years of Solitude

Rebeca, the adopted daughter of José Arcadio and Úrsula, comes to Macondo with her own set of challenges, including a condition that compels her to consume non-food items. Her transformation from a silent girl into a talking young woman marks a significant evolution in her character as she battles her past and strives for a place in the Buendía family dynamics.

Arcadio Buendia (Janer Villareal)

José Arcadio’s Adopted Son & Biological Grandson

Arcadio is the product of Pilar Ternera and José Arcadio’s fleeting relationship, becoming an adopted child of José Arcadio Buendía when he is brought to their home. His character develops into a critical leader in Macondo amid the absence of Colonel Aureliano Buendía, encapsulating the struggle for identity and acceptance within the Buendía legacy.

Aureliano Jose (Emilio Sanchez Vera)

Grandson of José Arcadio Buendía & Son of Colonel Aureliano Buendía

Following in the complicated family lineage, Aureliano José, son of Colonel Aureliano Buendía, mirrors the duality of love and rejection faced by his family.
