“Heretic” narrates the unsettling journey of two young Mormon missionaries, Sisters Barnes (Sophie Thatcher) and Paxton (Chloe East), who set out to spread their religious beliefs in a secluded mountain town. Their efforts to connect with the local community yield disappointing results, prompting them to engage Mr. Reed (Hugh Grant) at his isolated mansion, where he promises them homemade blueberry pie.
However, unease sets in as the sisters realize that Mr. Reed’s life doesn’t match his inviting façade. Challenged on their religious convictions, the missionaries quickly discover that Reed’s intentions are far more sinister than they appear.
In an unforgettable horror sequence, Sisters Barnes and Paxton decide to flee but find themselves trapped—a locked door sealing off their exit. Reed offers them a chilling choice between two doors leading to a grim cellar, one marked ‘belief’ and the other ‘disbelief.’ After much trepidation, they choose ‘belief’, only to find themselves face-to-face with a creepy old woman serving toxic blueberry pie.
How Does “Heretic”End?
The storyline escalates dramatically as Reed insists that the old woman will be resurrected and will reveal truths about the afterlife. Meanwhile, the Mormon elder Kennedy (Topher Grace) grows increasingly worried about the sisters’ whereabouts and checks in on Mr. Reed. Unbeknownst to him, the missionaries are devising a bold plan to escape, utilizing matches to signal for help.
A shocking twist unfolds when Reed brutally slits Barnes’ throat, eerily claiming she too will rise again. As chaos unfolds, Paxton uncovers a hidden cellar filled with women who have met grim fates at Reed’s hands. Utilizing her newfound strength, Paxton confronts and stabs Reed. However, the confrontation spirals into a deadly game as Reed retaliates against her.
Ultimately, in a gripping finale, Barnes makes a dramatic comeback, only to succumb to her injuries shortly thereafter. Paxton emerges as the sole survivor, a haunting testament to the harrowing events that transpired in Reed’s sinister mansion.
This intricate tale invites viewers to question everything—their beliefs, the nature of reality, and the lengths to which individuals will go when their convictions are severely tested.
