Building friendships is an essential part of Stardew Valley. Players stepping into the charming Pelican Town can foster connections within the community through thoughtful gestures and acts of kindness. Whether seeking platonic friendships or romantic relationships, establishing strong bonds is crucial for a rewarding gameplay experience.
While it’s common knowledge that conversing with villagers and gifting them items boosts friendship levels, there are nuances to these interactions. Not all actions or gifts yield the same results, and knowing the most effective ways to increase relationships can significantly enhance a player’s experience. Below, we explore how players can elevate their relationships with NPCs to the highest levels.
Understanding the Heart Scale
To monitor relationships with NPCs, players should check the heart tab in the Menu. This displays a list of all villagers alongside the number of hearts (or friendship levels) accumulated.
As players progress and gather more hearts, they unlock various rewards, including unique Heart Events, recipes delivered via mail, and expanded dialogue options. However, the heart scale merely scratches the surface of the friendship mechanics at play.
The One Heart Milestone
To advance a friendship by one heart, players aim to accumulate 250 friendship points with a specific NPC. Almost every form of interaction—whether through conversation or gift-giving—affects this point tally. Positive interactions earn points, while ignoring characters can lead to a decline in friendship levels.
Friendship Points Breakdown
Players can gain or lose friendship points through numerous interactions with the residents of Pelican Town. Here’s a closer look at how each type of interaction contributes to friendship growth.
Everyday Engagements
- Conversing with characters generally grants +20 points. If an NPC is busy with an activity, this reward drops to +10 points. Regardless of the scenario, it’s beneficial to greet characters daily to prevent friendship loss. A check mark will appear in the Social menu once a character has been spoken to within the day.
- Completing an item delivery from the Bulletin Board outside Pierre’s shop offers a substantial +150 points to the recipient.
- Failing to engage with a character results in a minor friendship decline, typically -2 points per day. Notably, if a bouquet has been gifted, that penalty increases to -10 points per day, and for married players, neglecting a spouse incurs a -20 point penalty.
The Art of Gift Giving
Gift preferences vary significantly among villagers, but certain items are universally appreciated.
- Loved Gifts: +80 points
- Liked Gifts: +45 points
- Neutral Gifts: +20 points
- Disliked Gifts: -20 points
- Hated Gifts: -40 points
Gifts exchanged during the Feast of the Winter Star yield 5x the points, while those given on a character’s birthday provide an impressive 8x points. Therefore, it’s wise to research gift preferences around special occasions to maximize friendship gains.
Engaging at the Movie Theater
Upon unlocking the cinema, players can invite friends or romantic partners to catch a film. To extend an invitation, purchase a movie ticket for 1000g and present it like a gift. Each character has individual preferences for both film genres and snacks, which can impact the friendship results:
- Loved Movie: +200 points
- Liked Movie: +100 points
- Disliked Movie: 0 points
- Loved Concession: +50 points
- Liked Concession: +25 points
- Disliked Concession: 0 points
Navigating Conversations & Dialogue
During interactions, NPCs may pose questions, such as Abigail inquiring about her artwork or Haley asking about the player’s farm activities. Selecting the right responses can yield +10 to +50 points, while incorrect choices may lead to a reduction in friendship points.
Players can often intuit the best responses based on the NPC’s personality. Generally, positive or thoughtful answers increase friendship, while unkind remarks can lead to penalties. Heart Events, which feature more intimate dialogue choices, can affect relationships significantly, resulting in increases or decreases of up to 200 points.
Festivals & Community Events
Participating in The Flower Dance
Players can invite an NPC to dance at the festival when their friendship level is at four hearts or higher. Participating in this dance results in a friendship boost of 1 heart (250 points).
Contributing to The Luau
During the summer festival potluck, players can enhance their friendship with villagers by adding items to the communal soup. The quality of the item influences friendships positively or negatively:
- Best Soup: +120 points
- Good Soup: +60 points
- Neutral Soup, or no items added: 0 points
- Bad Soup: -50 points
- Worst Soup: -100 points
Revitalizing The Community Center
Completing bundles in the derelict community center, particularly the ‘Bulletin Board’ bundles, awards players with 500 friendship points (equivalent to 2 hearts) with all non-dateable villagers, enhancing community ties profoundly.
