The Genesis of the Realms
The Division of Life and Death
Initially, the universe was merely chaotic primordial waters where life and death coexisted without distinction. Eventually, an entity known as the Soul King, Adnyeus, harnessed his powers to instill order, fragmenting this primordial chaos into three unique realms designed to house various types of souls, thereby establishing the cycle of life and death as recognized today. These realms are the Human World (or World of the Living), Hueco Mundo – a domain for lost souls known as Hollows, and the afterlife referred to as the Soul Society. Between these realms lies the Dangai, also termed the Precipice World, which serves as a corridor that links the Human World to the Soul Society and exists outside the constraints of time and space, part of the extensive void known as Garganta (a term borrowed from the Spanish word for “throat”but presented with kanji meaning “black cavity”).
Within the Garganta, reishi is unstable, failing to create permanent structures like those in the Soul Society or Hueco Mundo; nonetheless, it can give rise to transient spaces known as a Valley of Screams, formed from expelled souls outside of the reincarnation cycle. Notably, while the original narrative fails to address the connection of Hell, introduced in the series’ first arc, Ryohgo Narita’s Can’t Fear Your Own World novels uncover that one intention behind Adnyeus creating the World of the Living was to act as a cover for Hell, indicating that Hell indeed existed prior to the realms’ creation. The No Breaths From Hell one-shot reveals the interrelation between Hell and the three realms; specifically, that the reiatsu levels in Hell must counterbalance the combined reiatsu found in the three realms, lest the lid be lifted by Hell’s denizens, including the fallen Captains of the Gotei 13.

The Variances Across the BLEACH Realms
- The Human World/World of the Living
As anticipated, the Human World, or World of the Living, is where souls, referred to as Pluses, take form. They lead human lives, and upon death, souls are guided back to the Soul Society to await another cycle of reincarnation. Should a soul fail to return, it risks corruption, either through attacks from Hollows—former humans who have succumbed to despair and transformed into soulless monsters marked by a void within their bodies—or by falling into despair themselves. The Human World is home to Karakura, a location notorious for its inexplicable supernatural phenomena, predominantly due to its existence on the Jūreichi, an area marked by a high concentration of spiritual entities.

The Dangai serves as the connecting corridor between the Human World and Hueco Mundo, as well as the Hueco Mundo and Soul Society, forming part of the Garganta void. It is a separate dimension where time operates differently. Once a week, a non-spiritual entity known as Kōtotsu, or the Cleaner, traverses this corridor to eliminate foreign matter, thereby thwarting any potential use of this space by spiritual entities or foes to the Soul Society. Any entity caught in Kōtotsu’s path is trapped in the void, ensnared by a high-density current coursing through the Dangai and Kōtotsu itself. This danger necessitates caution when navigating the Dangai while Kōtotsu is present, yet Sōsuke Aizen once managed to destroy it and escaped unharmed.
- Hollow World
Hollows inhabit the domain known as Hueco Mundo, a realm positioned between the Human World and Soul Society, characterized by perpetual darkness and a vast expanse of white sand. Hueco Mundo is nearly devoid of substance but is rich in concentrated reishi. However, strong Hollows often find this reishi insufficient, prompting them to consume other souls, whether they be fellow Hollows or Pluses, to fulfill their needs. This realm connects to the Human World via the Dangai, though powerful Hollows and Arrancar predominantly utilize Garganta for inter-realm travel. Interestingly, the term “Hueco Mundo”combines Spanish words; it means “hollow”and “world,”aligning with the themes of emptiness prevalent among Hollows.
- Soul Society
In BLEACH, the Soul Society serves as the afterlife where spiritual beings, including Shinigami and ordinary human souls, reside, along with the dismembered Soul King, assaulted by the ancestors of the four Great Noble Houses of the Shinigami and transformed into a foundational element of the realms. The Soul King’s mutilation is what preserves the current structure of the realms, and if he were to be eliminated—as seen in BLEACH: Thousand-Year Blood War Part 3, episode 2—the realms would inevitably collapse, reverting the universe to primordial chaos.
The existence of Quincies, who extinguish the souls of Hollows, presents a direct threat to the stability of the universe. This justification underpinned the Shinigami’s previous confrontations with the Quincies and the near destruction of their kind.
