The typical choices of selling, dismantling, or disenchanting may seem wasteful in this situation. However, players can take advantage of a unique crafting feature known as the Reforging Bench. This feature allows you to exchange multiple items of the same type to potentially reroll their stats, often yielding better results than the individual items combined. Below, we outline how to unlock and utilize the Reforging Bench effectively in Path of Exile 2.
Unlocking the Reforging Bench
Timing Your Unlock
The Reforging Bench will not be available until you reach Act 3 of Path of Exile 2. If you’re just beginning your adventure, you may need to exercise some patience before accessing this valuable tool. As you progress through Act 3, you’ll encounter a quest titled “Legacy of the Vaal,”leading you to a new zone known as The Drowned City.
Upon completing this quest, head back to the Ziggurat Encampment and seek out an NPC named Oswald, located in the northwestern area of the map. Initiating a conversation with him will start the quest “Treasures of Utzaal,”essential for unlocking the Reforging Bench.
Conquering the Molten Vault and Mektul
Follow the quest marker to the Drowned City, specifically to the dungeon known as The Molten Vault. It would be prudent to equip any fire-resistant gear and ice-based abilities before entering, as you’ll face fire-themed adversaries. Navigate through the Vault until you reach Mektul, The Forgemaster.
A recommended level for tackling the Molten Vault is around 40. Mektul is a formidable opponent who unleashes powerful fire damage. Fortunately, his slow attack speed offers windows of opportunity to inflict damage on him. Stay vigilant with dodging, and seize the moment to strike. Remember, this battle occurs on a four-minute timer; failure to defeat Mektul in time will result in a deadly lava surge. Using cold damage against him can be advantageous once you familiarize yourself with his patterns.
After vanquishing Mektul and reclaiming the Hammer of Kamasa, return to town and speak to Oswald once more. Congratulations! You will now have access to the Reforging Bench, allowing you to begin rerolling your gear effortlessly. Additionally, you will be rewarded with an Uncut Skill Gem.

Moving forward, you’ll locate a Reforging Bench in every town, with the option to place one in your hideout for convenience. To utilize it, approach the bench and interact as you would with any crafting station.
To perform a reroll, you must input three items of the same type and rarity (e.g., three regular axes). In return, the bench will create a new item of the same category but with significantly different attributes. Note that the original items will be consumed during this process. The output item is determined by the input items, so you cannot expect to receive a Soul Core from gear inputs. Here’s what you can use at the Reforging Bench:
- Weapons, armor, or accessories of the same type and rarity
- Unique items
- Catalysts
- Essences
- Soul Cores
- Precursor Tablets
- Distilled Emotions
- Runes
- Relics
- Waystones of the same tier
It’s crucial to keep in mind that you’ll always need three input items, and the process will yield only one output. Most rerolls are determined randomly, but using Waystones and Distilled Emotions guarantees items of elevated tiers. Certain conditions apply as well: for instance, corrupted items cannot be utilized in this process.
Most rerolled items will require identification through the Hooded One or with a Scroll of Wisdom to reveal their full potential. Additionally, be aware that the item level of the new piece will match the lowest item level among those sacrificed. For optimal results, try to input three items of similar item levels to avoid wasting high-level ones for low-tier outputs.
