Unlocking Ascension Classes in Path of Exile 2: A Complete Guide

In Path of Exile 2, Ascendancies function as subclasses for the various character types. Each character possesses multiple Ascendancies that cater to distinct playstyles, thereby enriching the game’s buildcrafting experience.

Unlocking Ascendancy classes provides significant skill enhancements and power increases, enhancing your gameplay. To gain access to these powerful upgrades, players will need to achieve more than just Passive Skill Points. Here is a detailed guide on how to unlock your initial Ascendancy class.

Unlocking Your Ascendancy Class in PoE 2

Balbala sealed in her prison in PoE 2

To unlock an Ascendancy class, players must complete the Trial of the Sekhemas in Act 2. However, prior to engaging in this trial, you are required to defeat Balbala, located in Traitor’s Passage near the Halani Gates.

Balbala can pose a significant challenge. If you find difficulty in defeating her, consider progressing through the remainder of Act 2 to acquire better equipment and more skill points. Once you’re better prepared, return to face her in Traitor’s Passage for an easier encounter.

Understanding the Trial of the Sekhemas

The rewards room in PoE 2's Trial of the Sekhemas

The Trial of the Sekhemas is a challenging gauntlet comprising multiple rooms. Players face debilitating debuffs, and an Honour bar, resembling a health bar; any damage incurred reduces your Honour. Should you lose all Honour, you will die, resulting in a trial failure and the need to restart.

Upon successfully completing the Trial of the Sekhemas, players can access a reward room where they can utilize any keys collected during the trial to open chests. Notably, you’ll find an altar that grants you your initial two Ascendancy Points.

It is advisable to gather superior gear in PoE 2 before attempting the Trial of the Sekhemas, as failing can lead to significant time loss and frustration.

How to Acquire Additional Ascendancy Points in PoE 2

Trial of Chaos entrance in PoE 2

After obtaining your initial two Ascendancy Points, you can earn your next set by advancing to Act 3 and successfully completing the Trial of Chaos. To enter this trial, a specific item known as an Ultimatum is required, which resembles Balbala’s Barya. The first Ultimatum can be obtained from Xyclucian the Chimera, a formidable area boss found in the Chimeral Wetlands.

The Trial of Chaos presents a more demanding challenge compared to the Trial of Sekhemas, featuring several key differences:

  • No Honour bar is present.
  • The trial lacks branching paths leading to a final boss.
  • Players earn rewards for each room cleared (collectible at the end of the trial or upon surrender).

Successfully completing the Trial of Chaos for the first time rewards you with another two Ascendancy Points. To continue enhancing your character, repeat this trial on Cruel Difficulty, which becomes available after finishing the initial three acts of Path of Exile 2. Be aware that game development may introduce further changes in the future.
