Hironobu Sakaguchi, celebrated for creating the legendary Final Fantasy franchise, recently shared an exciting update about his next game project. He began his illustrious career in 1983 with what is now Square Enix, contributing as a game designer on early titles such as The Death Trap and King’s Knight before taking the helm as the director for the original Final Fantasy in 1987. This groundbreaking JRPG not only achieved remarkable success but also laid the groundwork for an enduring franchise that remains popular today.
Sakaguchi continued to lead the development of the following four main installments in the Final Fantasy series and took on the role of producer for Final Fantasy 6 through Final Fantasy 11. His influence extended to various spin-offs until his departure from the company in 2003, when he founded his own studio, Mistwalker. Under Mistwalker, Sakaguchi oversaw the creation of titles like Blue Dragon, in partnership with the celebrated Dragon Ball creator, Akira Toriyama, as well as successful projects such as Lost Odyssey and The Last Story. His latest release was the mobile RPG Fantasian in 2021, and he has since announced the commencement of a new game.
In a recent interview with Famitsu (as reported by GamesRadar), Sakaguchi revealed that he is eager to share insights about his upcoming project, especially now that Fantasian: Neo Dimension is available on consoles and PC. While details remain scarce, he confirmed that he completed the script last year and anticipates reaching a significant milestone in the game’s development over the next two years.
Script for Hironobu Sakaguchi’s Next Game is Completed
The upcoming project is speculated to be a dark fantasy title, developed in partnership with Nobuo Uematsu, a legendary figure known for composing captivating scores for many Final Fantasy titles created under Sakaguchi’s direction. He has previously indicated that the development team primarily consists of individuals who also contributed to Fantasian. Notably, Mistwalker recently filed a patent for the potential title Fantasian: Dark Edge, leading to speculation among fans that this new endeavor may be a sequel to the mobile RPG.
Prior to making this announcement, Sakaguchi had contemplated retirement from the gaming industry. However, he has since shifted his perspective, stating that he now views game development as a source of joy rather than a career obligation. While fans may remain hopeful for a return to the Final Fantasy universe, Sakaguchi has emphasized that he does not intend to revisit the franchise he once shaped, despite his admiration for newer installments like Final Fantasy 16.
