Venom 3 reviews have yet to be officially released, but early reactions circulating online may not provide the best news for supporters of Tom Hardy’s previous portrayals in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe.
The upcoming film, Venom: The Last Dance, serves as the final installment in a trilogy that began with the original Venom movie and was followed by Let There Be Carnage. While both prior films succeeded at the box office, they faced significant criticism from reviewers. In contrast, fans seemed to appreciate them more positively. The initial Venom holds an audience score of 80% compared to its 30% critics score, whereas the audience score for Let There Be Carnage stands at 84%, with critics rating it at 57%. However, according to a reputable industry scooper, Venom 3 might not resonate as well with audiences.
Scooper Daniel Richtman has claimed to have spoken to several viewers who screened Venom 3 and expressed disappointment, despite enjoying the first two films in the franchise. Richtman didn’t specify who these individuals were or how many he spoke with, but he suggested that these reactions may not represent the general consensus, stating, “Take that as you will.”
I spoke to people who saw Venom 3. They enjoyed the first two movies but told me they didn’t like the third one. Take that as you will 😅💀 pic.twitter.com/u3cJTvKzP7 — Daniel Richtman (@DanielRPK) October 17, 2024
People with bad taste didn’t like #Venom3, could be the best or worst thing for this movie, but either way, it makes me more excited 🕷️🕷️🕷️ https://t.co/7o7dtdeZOC — Jack McBryan (@McBDirect) October 17, 2024
In response to Richtman’s comments, Jack McBryan, co-founder of The Direct, took a jab at those who rated the previous two films positively, indicating his excitement for The Last Dance. He tweeted, “People with bad taste didn’t like #Venom3, could be the best or worst thing for this movie, but either way, it makes me more excited.”Some fans reacted to Richtman’s observations by mocking Let There Be Carnage, with one user, @NevinMcScott, commenting, “Anyone who said they enjoyed the second is lying,”while @charIiestfu added, “I think anyone who liked the second one cannot be trusted.”
As audiences await critical evaluations of Venom 3, a negative reception could pose further challenges for Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, which has already seen lesser reception for titles like Madame Web and Morbius. Despite their box office successes, these films struggled critically and financially. With the anticipated release of Kraven the Hunter on December 13, 2024, many speculate if it will follow suit with similar shortcomings.
The impressive box office results from the first two Venom films do not guarantee that the third installment will also achieve commercial success. Recent trends show that sequels in the superhero genre have found it challenging to replicate or exceed their predecessors’ financial success. For instance, Aquaman 2 and Shazam 2 both fell short compared to the initial films in their respective series, and The Marvels struggled to approach the substantial earnings of the first Captain Marvel. Most recently, Joker 2 also performed poorly at the box office, despite being a follow-up to a critically acclaimed billion-dollar film. The fate of Venom 3 remains uncertain.
Venom: The Last Dance is set to hit theaters on October 25, 2024.
