The upcoming film Venom: The Last Dance could serve as the concluding chapter for Tom Hardy’s portrayal of Eddie Brock and his symbiote counterpart. Nonetheless, this doesn’t imply that the movie won’t lay the groundwork for future narratives within its expansive comic universe.
The sequel to Venom: Let There Be Carnage is expected to bring an array of beloved comic book characters to the forefront, including Toxin, played by Stephen Graham. Many fans were excited to spot Knull in the latest trailer for Venom: The Last Dance. This formidable antagonist, debuting in comic books in 2018, is known as the creator of the symbiotes. He is depicted in the trailer seated on a dark throne, surrounded by monstrous symbiotes.
Currently, Knull’s role in the film remains largely undisclosed, including who will portray him. However, Kelly Marcel, the writer and director of Venom: The Last Dance, indicated that the King in Black’s cinematic journey will not end with this film. In a recent interview with IGN, she hinted, “This is merely the beginning for Knull.”
“We recognize the significance of Knull to the fans, so just as we built a foundation for Venom, we hope to do the same for him. The King in Black is too powerful for a single film,” Marcel continued. “This movie introduces Knull, but it merely scratches the surface of his story.”
Looking Ahead: The Venom Franchise
In the same conversation, Marcel shared that she and Hardy always envisioned a three-part narrative arc for Eddie Brock’s journey. Furthermore, Hardy has announced on his social media accounts that Venom: The Last Dance will mark his final appearance in the role. This leaves Knull’s future surrounded by intrigue following the film. The only other Spider-Man-related project currently confirmed is the much-anticipated Kraven the Hunter.
As of now, there are no officially confirmed symbiote-related projects that would logically feature Knull. It seems Sony might be waiting to evaluate the box office performance of Venom: The Last Dance before unveiling future initiatives. If Hardy is indeed stepping away from the franchise, the studio may also be on the lookout for another actor of equal talent to take the lead in upcoming Venom projects.
Regardless, Marcel appears optimistic about Knull’s potential for reappearing post his live-action debut. “As fans know, there are numerous symbiote tales — the universe is vast and intricate, and one film could never encompass Knull’s full essence,” she stated to IGN. “Beyond this trilogy, many more stories can be told.”
Importantly, Knull is not just connected to Venom; he has ties to various other comic characters as well. Given his relationship with the symbiotes, he is a villain who could effortlessly be woven into the arcs of several superheroes. It remains to be seen what specific “stories” Marcel envisions for Knull and whether they will ever materialize.
Venom: The Last Dance is scheduled to be released in theaters on Friday, October 25.
