Venom: The Last Dance Box Office Opening Underwhelms Expectations

Essential Insights

  • The launch of Venom: The Last Dance underperformed at the box office, failing to meet optimistic forecasts.
  • In spite of the unfavorable reviews from critics, the film secured $124 million from international audiences.
  • Experts point to the film’s inability to elevate tension and stakes compared to its predecessors as a reason for the subpar performance.

The initial box office figures for Venom: The Last Dance were disappointing, coming in below expectations. However, the latest entry in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, featuring Tom Hardy, found some relief thanks to its international performance.

This film marks the final chapter in a trilogy that includes the financially successful films Venom and Let There Be Carnage. Despite receiving a lukewarm response from critics, audiences eagerly supported these earlier films, which collectively amassed about $856.1 million and $506.9 million at the global box office, respectively. It’s noteworthy that the latter film achieved this during the ongoing challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Although Venom: The Last Dance has faced largely unfavorable critiques, its path to matching its predecessors’ box office triumphs seems arduous due to its opening numbers being the weakest in the series.

Opening weekend figures showed that Venom: The Last Dance accrued $51 million domestically, undercutting the anticipated $65 million for its debut weekend. According to Variety, industry insiders predict that the final tally for the opening weekend may fall below $50 million. Even if it maintains the $51 million count, the film’s debut still lags significantly behind the original’s $80 million and the sequel’s $90 million opening figures. Sony speculates that many potential viewers opted to stay home to catch the World Series matchup between the Yankees and the Dodgers, particularly as these were crucial markets for Venom: The Last Dance.

Venom 3 The Last Dance Rotten Tomatoes Score

On a brighter note, Venom: The Last Dance appears to have resonated with international audiences, raking in $124 million globally, which brings its cumulative total to $175 million. Nevertheless, it’s crucial for the film to maintain its theatrical run to recuperate its $120 million production budget. Generally, films in Hollywood need to generate approximately double their budget to cover costs and begin making a profit. Jeff Brock from Exhibitor Relations shared his perspective with Variety, stating that the film’s content seemed to have taken a step back, something audiences recognized just from the trailers. He remarked, ‘Superhero fans expect escalated stakes with each sequel; however, that was not the case with Venom: The Last Dance.’”

The recent underperformance of Venom: The Last Dance reflects a larger trend within the superhero genre. Earlier in October, Joker 2 also struggled at the box office despite being a follow-up to a blockbuster hit that won accolades including the Academy Award for Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix. Furthermore, both Aquaman 2 and The Marvels underachieved compared to the billion-dollar success of their predecessors.

While box office successes like Deadpool and Wolverine suggest that superhero fatigue has not fully taken hold, their successes stand in contrast to many recent comic book adaptations. With Kraven the Hunter set for a December release, it seems unlikely that Sony will break its streak of mediocre performances following the failures of Morbius and Madame Web. Whether Venom: The Last Dance can eventually turn the tide and exceed expectations remains uncertain, but for it to finish its theatrical journey successfully, fan attendance in theaters is crucial.
