The Virgin River showrunner has confirmed that one of the show’s key characters will not be making an appearance in the upcoming season 7. Since its debut on Netflix in 2019, this romantic drama has garnered a dedicated fanbase throughout its six seasons, and anticipation is already building for the next installment, which has been officially renewed.
Starring a talented ensemble that includes Alexandra Breckenridge, Martin Henderson, Colin Lawrence, Tim Matheson, Benjamin Hollingsworth, Mark Ghanimé, Sarah Dugdale, and Annette O’Toole, Virgin River released its sixth season on December 19, to much acclaim.
Key Character Update
During a recent interview with TVLine, showrunner Patrick Sean Smith disclosed that Mark Ghanimé, who portrays Cameron, will not be returning as a series regular for season 7. While Ghanimé’s absence is certain for the next season, Smith left the door open for a potential future return of Cameron, commending both the character and the actor.
“I love Mark, who plays Cameron, and I love the character of Cameron. He will always be a part of the world, and I would love to see his character back, but he won’t be a series regular in Season 7, unfortunately.”
Impact of Cameron’s Departure on Virgin River
Transitioning Cameron’s Role
While some fans may find this news disappointing, it aligns with the show’s narrative direction. Introduced in season 4, Cameron served as a viable love interest for Mel, before shifting his affection towards Muriel. However, his screen time diminished significantly during season 6, with Ghanimé only appearing in three episodes.
The transition began early in season 6, where it became evident that Cameron was being gradually phased out. His breakup with Muriel occurred off-screen, establishing a clean break from the plot. In his brief return, he informed Muriel of his plans to move back to San Diego, effectively bringing closure to his character arc.

Closure of Cameron’s Narrative
Despite Cameron’s charm, it seems prudent for Virgin River to pivot its focus toward other key relationships within the story. The complex love triangles that he was once part of have reached their conclusion, leaving little room for meaningful, new dynamics without feeling forced.
Bringing Cameron back in a significant way would likely require another emotional entanglement or a revisit of his romance with Michelle, which could risk becoming repetitive. Nonetheless, showrunner Smith has not entirely dismissed the chance for Ghanimé to make a cameo in season 7.
