Online discussions often condescend to adult women, suggesting they’re too naive to make their own choices. This time, however, there’s an intriguing twist involving a parasocial connection.
In the latest episode of Chicken Shop Date featuring Andrew Garfield and Amelia Dimoldenberg, viewers are clamoring for the two to become an actual couple. Well, almost everyone—one dissenting voice has emerged amidst a flood of enthusiastic reactions. The buzz surrounding this much-anticipated episode has led to various fan theories speculating about Garfield and Dimoldenberg’s chemistry. Over the years, they’ve appeared together on numerous red carpets, to the extent that fans often perceive their interactions as flirtatious.
The latest episode of Chicken Shop Date seems to validate fan assumptions. Some theories are far-fetched, such as claims that they’re already in a relationship. Others express a desire to see them star together in romantic comedies. However, one fan critiqued the widespread support for their potential romance, citing the significant age difference between them.
As a woman in my 30s, I find it frustrating how often society infantilizes us. We’re labeled as past our prime, pressured to conform to certain behaviors online, while simultaneously being treated like children. One Twitter user noted that it’s odd to celebrate the playful banter between Dimoldenberg and Garfield because of their age difference—41 years for Garfield versus 30 for Dimoldenberg.
Keep in mind, these are two consenting adults capable of making their own life decisions if that’s what they choose. Despite this, an odd narrative has emerged that a 30-year-old can’t possibly connect with someone in their 40s. Frankly, this trend of infantilizing grown women is quite peculiar!
It’s time to stop treating adult women like children
The memes surrounding this situation have taken off, highlighting a bizarre trend online where any perceived age gap is deemed unacceptable. While it can be challenging for adults to find partners their age, there comes a point when age differences between consenting adults should not be an issue.
Many jokes have emerged referencing a memorable moment from Law & Order. In it, Chris Meloni’s character, Elliot Stabler, exclaims that a person is merely “a child”by age, echoing the sentiment of many in the comments.
SHE WAS 30 YEARS OLD YOU SICK FUCK…A CHILD! https://t.co/Ip4SZr4YeJ pic.twitter.com/3e7sUYTWKN

However, this issue opens up a vital discussion. Women are often pressured to adhere to societal expectations about their behavior. We hear misleading comments like, “You shouldn’t act this way at your age,” and “That’s not a suitable partner for you because he’s older.” So, what are our options?
Are we permitted to make choices for ourselves, or will we continually be told to conform to outdated stereotypes? It’s frustrating. If Dimoldenberg chooses to pursue a relationship with Garfield, that should not be deemed inappropriate. Merely observing an age difference does not inherently make it “strange.”Let’s allow adults to navigate their own lives without unsolicited judgments.
