Batman recently made an intriguing appearance in the evolving DCU, which amplifies my excitement regarding the live-action suit in the upcoming film The Brave and the Bold. Featured briefly in a flashback within the animated series Creature Commandos, Batman’s full form is largely obscured by shadow, yet one distinct feature stands out— heralding his highly anticipated live-action debut.
This animated introduction ties to the backstory of Doctor Phosphorus, voiced by Alan Tudyk, as revealed in episode 6 of Creature Commandos. The narrative unfolds the tale of a nuclear scientist who becomes a vengeful crime lord after the loss of his family. Batman’s intervention forms a critical link that unfolds how Phosphorus came to serve under Amanda Waller as part of Task Force M. Therefore, the initial glimpse of the DCU’s Dark Knight has me particularly keen to speculate on what we might see in his upcoming feature film portrayal, especially concerning his iconic cowl.
A Thrilling Tease from Batman’s DCU Introduction
Comic-Accurate White Eyes and Lenses
In a nod to the classic style of Batman: The Animated Series, Batman emerges on a rooftop, momentarily illuminated by a bolt of lightning as he disrupts Phosphorus’ rendezvous at The Ice Lounge—a clever homage to the Penguin’s Iceberg Lounge. Most elements indicative of Batman are present, including his pointed ears, flowing cape, cowl, and utility belt. However, subtle details like the costume’s color scheme and the design of the bat emblem remain concealed.
Notably, the most discernible aspect from Batman’s DCU introduction is his comic-accurate white eyes on the cowl, a hallmark feature prevalent in comic books and animated series. This visual characteristic enhances Batman’s mythical aura while offering a sense of intimidation, suggesting that he is something beyond human. In the realm of live-action adaptations, however, the appearance of white eyes has been decidedly scarce.
Permanent White Eyes: A Landmark Move in Live-Action Depictions
Previous Batman Films: Brief White Eye Glimpses
Historically, live-action renditions of Batman have only featured white eyes on two occasions, but both instances were fleeting. The first appearance occurred in 2008’s The Dark Knight, where Christian Bale’s Batman utilized sonar technology to locate the Joker among hostages and approaching SWAT teams. Unfortunately, this feature vanished almost immediately and was not revisited in Nolan’s trilogy.
Similarly, in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, directed by Zack Snyder, Ben Affleck’s Batman showcased glowing white eyes only during specific scenes involving power armor. Unfortunately, this look did not extend to his regular costume throughout the film or in the subsequent DCEU installments. This context amplifies my enthusiasm for Batman’s DCU animated appearance, particularly with the prospect of a permanent, comics-accurate white-eyed cowl.
James Gunn’s Perspective on Animated and Live-Action DCU Representations
“It’s Not Far Off…”
While Batman’s animated version showcases white eyes, it does not automatically assure that the live-action adaptation in The Brave and the Bold will follow suit. In a recent discussion, James Gunn emphasized that although the animated iterations provide a rough template for the live-action alignments, it is essential to remain cautious of making assumptions about their direct representation:

Ultimately, subject to design choices, there remains a possibility that Batman’s character design may shift leading up to The Brave and the Bold. Despite these uncertainties, my fervor remains unabated regarding the prospect of white eyes making their way onto a framing live-action Batman suit. It would not only set this incarnation apart within the DCU but also differentiate it from Robert Pattinson’s portrayal, who is expected to continue with Matt Reeves’ trilogy existing in parallel continuity.
