Why Destiny 2’s Contest of Elders is Inferior to The Coil

Why Destiny 2’s Contest of Elders is Inferior to The Coil

Overview

  • The Contest of Elders offers less thrilling loot compared to The Coil.
  • The Tonic system negatively impacts drop rates for Destiny 2 activities due to its adjustment of base probabilities.
  • Bungie faces challenges in recreating the success of prior seasonal content in Destiny 2 following The Coil.

In the realm of Destiny 2, not every seasonal activity holds the same design prowess. Some are intuitive and accessible to players of all skill levels, while others require more strategy and typically yield greater rewards. Over the years, various seasonal activities have missed the mark with the player base for numerous reasons. However, one standout feature regarded as the pinnacle of seasonal events is The Coil, introduced during the Season of the Wish. This event contained secrets, score-based rewards, hidden chests, and multiple challenging bosses.

Conversely, the Contest of Elders is inspired by Destiny 1’s Prison of Elders from the House of Wolves expansion. While it shares a similar format to The Coil—featuring multiple rooms, several boss encounters, and the incorporation of random modifiers that refresh after each encounter—its loot offerings are disappointingly inferior.

Why Contest of Elders Falls Short in Loot Compared to The Coil

Although the loot system in Contest of Elders is lacking, the issue does not solely stem from the activity design; instead, it highlights a broader issue. Ideally, this activity should have premiered with the Revenant expansion, offering more than just seasonal weaponry, particularly non-craftable variants. In contrast, The Coil had the capacity to provide some of the most coveted loot in Destiny 2, including high-stat armor, Ascendant Alloy, and red-border weapons for crafting.

Contest of Elders Struggles to Provide Engaging New Loot

With the launch of Contest of Elders in Destiny 2’s Revenant Act 2, the available new weapon pool is sharply limited, consisting of only three weapons. This constraint diminishes the overall excitement. Although players can receive other Revenant weapons, the more desirable choices like Noxious Vetiver and Scavenger’s Fate stand out, complemented by some revamped Season of the Splicer weapons. Nevertheless, the sporadic loot output from Contest of Elders doesn’t align with the expectations set by The Coil’s extensive offerings, a disparity intensified by the shorter event duration.

Impact of Destiny 2’s Tonics on Contest of Elders’ Loot

The Tonic system in Destiny 2 is designed to bolster the drop rates for Revenant weapons, yet its effectiveness is compromised by a mismatch between low ingredient yields and high crafting costs. Additionally, players have reported bugs affecting Tonics since Act 1, which have persisted into Act 2. As a result, the potential benefits of Tonics do not compensate for the already diminished loot probabilities associated with seasonal activities, including Contest of Elders. Even when this activity provides enjoyable runs, the lack of meaningful rewards makes it less appealing when compared to other options.

To illustrate, the regular drop rates from Destiny 2’s Grandmaster Nightfalls outperform those of Contest of Elders, also offering more engaging loot. For example, the Rake Angle glaive can roll with attributes like Replenishing Aegis and Chill Clip, making it a formidable option for dealing with Champions. Despite some improvements with weapons like Bitter/Sweet and Noxious Vetiver, Revenant weapons have not managed to achieve the appeal of past offerings. Thus, Bungie continues to strive for the same level of success with seasonal content that was achieved with The Coil, but has yet to do so convincingly with Contest of Elders.
