Despite his significant role in the Marvel Comics universe, one prominent Spider-Man villain has yet to make a cinematic appearance. Over the years, audiences have witnessed Spider-Man face a spectrum of antagonists, from renowned supervillains like Doctor Octopus and Venom in Sam Raimi’s iconic trilogy to less familiar foes, such as Shocker and Aaron Davis (pre-Prowler), in the MCU’s Spider-Man: Homecoming. Additionally, the Sony’s Spider-Man Universe has explored the journeys of villains turned anti-heroes in their own dedicated films.
Green Goblin, Spider-Man’s quintessential archenemy, has consistently posed a serious threat across all major live-action adaptations. Notable portrayals include Willem Dafoe’s Norman Osborn as Spidey’s principal adversary in both Sam Raimi’s original films and the MCU’s No Way Home. Other interpretations, such as James Franco’s Harry Osborn in Spider-Man 3, and Dane DeHaan’s Harry Osborn in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, have also contributed to the complex legacy of this iconic character.
Marvel’s Ultimate Green Goblin Still Awaiting His Cinematic Debut
All Live-Action Green Goblins Inspired by the Classic Version
In the Ultimate Marvel universe (Earth 1610), Norman Osborn evolves into a colossal, monstrous being rather than donning the traditional Green Goblin suit. His transformation stems from a failed attempt to replicate the Super Soldier serum, resulting in a creature reminiscent of the Hulk. While major Spider-Man films have drawn inspiration from this universe, such as Dafoe’s pursuit of a Super Soldier serum in Raimi’s trilogy and Chris Cooper’s portrayal of a morbidly afflicted Norman Osborn in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, they have not yet explored the Ultimate Green Goblin’s monstrous form.
In a hypothetical continuation of The Amazing Spider-Man series, Chris Cooper’s character could have been revived with enhanced powers. A deleted scene from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 hinted at Oscorp preserving Norman Osborn’s head in cryogenic storage, suggesting a future transformation into an even more grotesque Green Goblin. However, the cancellation of The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and the planned Sinister Six film thwarted this plot development.
Potential Showdown: An MCU Character vs. Ultimate Green Goblin
MCU’s Miles Morales Might Face a New Green Goblin After Peter Parker
Given Tom Holland’s previous encounters with Dafoe’s Green Goblin, it seems unlikely that any version of Norman Osborn will reappear in the immediate future. Nonetheless, Green Goblin remains a pivotal figure in the Spider-Man lore, warranting exploration once Holland’s Peter Parker steps aside. When Miles Morales takes center stage, he could potentially face a reimagined form of the Green Goblin. In the Ultimate comics, Peter Parker meets his end while battling the Green Goblin, setting the stage for Miles Morales’ emergence as the new Spider-Man.
The animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse adeptly adapts this narrative, portraying Miles Morales’ origin amidst the chaos following a monstrous Green Goblin’s attack. Currently, it appears that a version of Norman Osborn remains undiscovered within the MCU timeline, offering a unique opportunity for introducing a new incarnation that seeks to emulate the powers of heroes like Captain America or Hulk.
This fresh take on Green Goblin would distinguish itself from Willem Dafoe’s memorable performance, which remains a daunting standard for any future actor attempting to portray the iconic villain.
