Marvel has been enjoying significant success recently, with various video game titles contributing to its expanding portfolio. Insomniac’s Spider-Man series continues to experience remarkable sales, while Eidos-Montreal’s Guardians of the Galaxy, though not a blockbuster performer, garnered acclaim for its storytelling and character development. Additionally, the newly launched Marvel Rivals has made a notable mark in the hero shooter genre. Although Marvel’s Avengers faced challenges, overall, the past few years have been promising for Marvel Games.
Looking ahead, the excitement isn’t slowing down. Several highly anticipated titles are in the works, including Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, a new Blade game, an EA Black Panther title, and an Iron Man game developed by EA Motive. These projects prominently feature some of Marvel’s most beloved characters, but despite this upward trend, one hero’s absence from the gaming landscape is becoming increasingly conspicuous.
The Urgent Need for Daredevil’s Video Game Comeback
Daredevil’s Long Absence from Video Games
Introducing The Man Without Fear, Daredevil made his comic book debut in 1964 and his first video game cameo in 1995, featured in Venom/Spider-Man: Separation Anxiety. Since then, he’s appeared in over 20 video games—mostly in supporting roles. While famous for his contributions in titles like the LEGO Marvel Superheroes, the Marvel Ultimate Alliance series, and various mobile games, he last had a significant playable role in 2019’s Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3.
Ironically, Daredevil’s only solo game was a tie-in with the 2003 film of the same name. For the last five years, he has largely been sidelined in the gaming realm, appearing mainly in mobile games like Marvel Snap, Marvel Puzzle Quest, and as a purchasable skin in Fortnite. Furthermore, despite speculation and hopes, Daredevil has yet to appear in Insomniac’s highly successful Spider-Man franchise. Even in the diverse roster of Marvel Rivals, there’s no indication of his inclusion.
The Timing of Daredevil’s Gaming Absence
Daredevil’s retreat from the public eye followed the conclusion of his Netflix series in 2018, coinciding with his diminishing presence in Marvel video games. However, in recent years, Disney has been revitalizing interest in this iconic character. Following a cameo in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, Charlie Cox reprised his role in a more significant capacity in 2022’s She-Hulk series and will appear in the forthcoming Echo series this year. Anticipation is building for Daredevil: Born Again, slated to premiere in March 2025, marking his return to the forefront.
Marvel seems poised for a Daredevil revival, and it would be an opportune moment to reintegrate him into the gaming universe. Whether through a cameo in a high-profile Marvel release or featuring as a playable character in Marvel Rivals, Daredevil deserves a triumphant return to the realm of video games without further delay.
