What a thrilling finale for Only Murders in the Building, right? Charles, Oliver, and Mabel successfully “captured” Sazz’s killer, thanks to an unexpected ally. Plus, we witnessed Oliver and Loretta tie the knot in the charming courtyard of the Arconia. A happy ending, wouldn’t you agree?
Not quite.
Warning: Spoilers for the season 4 finale of Only Murders in the Building ahead.
Given that Only Murders in the Building has been confirmed for a fifth season, it was almost predictable that another murder would unfold during the finale. After all, it’s a tradition! I admit, I was taken aback when Lester, the Arconia’s beloved doorman, turned out to be the victim—though his mysterious background might have hinted at secrets lurking within. Unfortunately, if someone was going to meet their end in the building, he fit the bill. Furthermore, the groundwork has been laid for numerous new narratives next season, with the introduction of the enigmatic Sofia Caccimelio (Tea Leoni) and Oliver’s potential relocation to New Zealand.
In fact, with so many new plots emerging, the finale—particularly the resolution of Sazz’s murder—felt surprisingly hurried. Did I enjoy the daring ledge walk performed by Charles and Oliver? Without a doubt! Did I chuckle when Charles brandished Eva Longoria’s multi-tool vibrator as a threat to Marshall P. Pope? Absolutely! Did I beam at Oliver and Loretta during their wedding? Of course! Yet, everything seemed too … easy, as if the writers and the characters were simply poised for the next twist, eager to transition into the following season.
This tendency is something I’ve noted before with the show. Only Murders often seems to have one eye on future developments, sometimes sacrificing character development and authenticity in the process. I was struck by the limited attendance at Oliver and Loretta’s wedding. Where were the other Arconia residents? Oliver’s son made an appearance, along with Howard and Uma, but that felt like the bare minimum for a significant occasion.
A series can only rely on future potential for so long before it begins to fray at the edges, and it feels like we might already be seeing that happen. For instance, Jan has been lurking in the secret passageways this entire season just to make her dramatic shot at Sazz’s killer at the perfect moment. Okay, she’s one of the few recurring faces from season 1 and adds a special touch of suspense, but really? No one thought to check for her? It’s evident Oliver, Mabel, and Charles will never find themselves in genuine peril, and while this show is technically a comedy, they are still dealing with serious murder cases. Eventually, something must alter.
I genuinely adore this show—always have, always will. However, all great stories eventually reach their conclusion, and I believe that Only Murders in the Building’s time to shine is nearing its end as well. Season 5 could provide the ideal opportunity to wrap up the journey of this beloved trio. Season 4 has acknowledged certain plot inconsistencies that both the podcast and show need to address; Mabel is contemplating her future, Oliver is establishing one with Loretta, and Charles is finally tapping into his emotions, ready to embrace life’s experiences. It seems like the right moment for them to move on from a podcast that has filled their lives with joy and affection, despite its dark themes.
The more Only Murders attempts to expand and enhance the previous narrative, the more it risks losing the charm that made it appealing in the first place. While this season did a commendable job delving into the characters’ grief, it also felt burdened by numerous celebrity cameos and an extravagant Hollywood storyline. (I miss earlier moments like Oliver simply bringing Sting a turkey!) Here’s hoping that with Hollywood now in the rearview, Only Murders in the Building can deliver one final season of captivating murder escapades set in the Arconia and tie everything up nicely. Fingers crossed!
