- The success of The Penguin has ignited debate over whether The Batman should continue as an independent entity, increasing interest in merging Reeves’ universe with the DC brand.
The DC Universe is set to debut this December with the forthcoming Creature Commandos, followed closely by the release of Superman in theaters next year. Despite the eagerly awaited return of the Man of Steel, there are indications that DC Studios is keen to introduce a new Batman sooner rather than later. Speculation suggests that David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, seeks to amplify Batman-centered content and is contemplating making The Batman part of the broader DC Universe.
When James Gunn and Peter Safran took the reins at DC Studios, they confirmed that a new iteration of Batman would eventually join the combined universe. However, Matt Reeves’ take on Batman, which also encompasses The Penguin, was always meant to stand apart. Yet, Zaslav’s push for more Batman-centric media raises the question of whether Robert Pattinson could seamlessly transition into DC Studios’ new Batman.
Warner Bros.’ Vision for Matt Reeves’ Batman Universe
Upon recruiting Gunn and Safran to lead DC Studios, Warner Bros. aimed to revamp their cinematic offerings. However, established DC films were permitted to proceed unaffected, reserving alterations for any projects flagged by Zaslav. One such project, The Batman, performed admirably at the box office, pulling in a staggering $772.27 million globally, leading to an expedited approval for a sequel and multiple spin-offs slated for release on Max. While one spin-off focused on Gotham City’s police force was shelved, Warner Bros. and Reeves are moving ahead with The Penguin, featuring Colin Farrell as the notorious villain. The series has already premiered on Max, garnering positive reviews from both critics and audiences. Unfortunately, fans hoping to see Pattinson reprise his role as the caped vigilante will have to be patient—his next appearance isn’t expected until 2026. Production is slated to kick off next year, with ties to The Penguin set to conclude its first season next month.
Unlike Joker: Folie à Deux and prior releases from the DC Extended Universe, which emerged post DC Studios formation, The Batman had been meant to finalize its trilogy separately. However, following the triumphs of The Caped Crusader on Prime Video, Warner Bros. appears ready to ramp up Batman-related content. This shift could indicate that The Batman franchise might not remain standalone, specifically if Zaslav has his way—an outcome that could be beneficial.
Is Robert Pattinson the Right Choice for the DC Universe’s Batman?
Initially, the announcement of Pattinson as the lead in The Batman took many by surprise. Known predominantly for his role in the Twilight saga, there were doubts regarding his ability to fill the shoes of established Batmans like Christian Bale and Ben Affleck. Pattinson, however, exceeded expectations, showcasing a compelling rendition of the beloved superhero, leaving fans eager for his return to Reeves’ Gotham City. It will be two years before audiences can see him as Bruce Wayne again, but given the prolonged interval, might DC Studios orchestrate a way to blend Reeves’ narrative with the upcoming plans for the DC Universe? Although the initial intent was to select a fresh face for Batman in the shared universe, that approach would delay his introduction considerably. With an acclaimed Batman story already in place, it would be wise for DC Studios to contemplate making Pattinson their primary Batman.
Reeves has already established a captivating universe capable of thriving independently. His portrayal of Gotham has resonated with audiences, as evidenced by the strong ratings for The Penguin. In fact, The Penguin achieved the largest four-day audience for a new series across its streaming platform worldwide, a record unbroken since The Last of Us. Considering the enthusiasm surrounding Reeves’ Gotham, does it still make sense for The Batman to exist as a standalone project? Especially given that Pattinson has proven to be a high-quality Batman. While current rumors suggest Zaslav is interested in Pattinson leading the DC Universe, this is a prospect worth serious consideration. Batman’s longstanding appeal at the box office is undeniable, and although fans are willing to wait, timing remains one of Hollywood’s greatest challenges.
As of now, The Batman Part 2 is scheduled for release on October 2, 2026, with no set date for the third film in Reeves’ trilogy.
