Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Star Wars: Skeleton Crew.
Missing Out on Rogue Squadron: A Call for Action
The Star Wars universe seems to be continuously tantalizing fans with exhilarating X-wing action without delivering the anticipated feature film, Rogue Squadron. Amid the tales unfolding in The Mandalorian and other New Republic Era series, brief yet thrilling glimpses of X-wing pilots have surfaced, illustrating the ongoing efforts of the New Republic to maintain peace following the Empire’s defeat. Nonetheless, it has been over four years since the much-anticipated Rogue Squadron movie was first announced.
The Journey of Rogue Squadron’s Development
The project was initially unveiled in December 2020, with director Patty Jenkins at the helm, promising an original narrative focused on a new generation of X-wing pilots. Despite the initial excitement, the film has faced numerous delays and has since been removed from Lucasfilm’s release schedule. Meanwhile, fans continue to witness tantalizing X-wing moments through various series, but the yearning for Rogue Squadron remains unfulfilled.
X-Wing Action in Star Wars’ Mandoverse
Recently, Skeleton Crew has emerged as a notable entry in this regard. Although it remains uncertain whether the X-wings in episode six belong to Adelphi Base, those chasing Jod Na Nawood and the crew on The Onyx Cinder seem to come from Blue Squadron. Fans have been treated to thrilling aerial sequences featuring X-wings battling various pirate crafts, but many feel these moments lack the depth of in-cockpit action.
The Lost Potential of “Rangers of the New Republic”
Cancellation and Its Impact on X-Wing Action
The excitement surrounding the X-wing scenes in Skeleton Crew could have been further amplified had Lucasfilm moved forward with Rangers of the New Republic. This spin-off, initially planned to spotlight the Aldelphi Rangers and the beloved character Cara Dune, was canceled due to the dismissal of actress Gina Carano. While no scripts were finalized, elements envisioned for the show were eventually integrated into The Mandalorian, leaving many fans disappointed.
There is still a glimmer of hope for X-wing enthusiasts, as the world anticipates a potential revival of this concept in future projects.
The Future of Rogue Squadron
Patty Jenkins’ Ongoing Commitment
Despite being removed from the release calendar, Rogue Squadron is not entirely abandoned. Patty Jenkins recently confirmed in March 2024 that she has renewed her contract to write and direct the film. This commitment suggests that the creative journey for this project is still active, with Jenkins working on the screenplay.
Fans are hopeful that the exhilarating X-wing action showcased in recent shows will eventually culminate in the long-awaited film, drawing inspiration from legendary naval combat films like Top Gun. If and when Rogue Squadron finally reaches theaters, it could serve as a spectacular tribute to the franchise, something that should have been prioritized by Lucasfilm.
For now, we can only hope for more engaging X-wing content as various Star Wars narratives continue to unfold.
The first six episodes of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew are currently streaming on Disney+.
